AfriCamps Klein Karoo – Guest Post by Taryn Smith

Dec 9, 2016

Taryn Smith is a wife, a mother and a blogger who loves to travel. She recently stayed over at AfriCamps Klein Karoo.

“I grew up traveling extensively throughout South Africa and the surrounding African countries. My parents literally wrote the book on travel in our beautiful country. We drove thousands of kilometres every year exploring, photographing and documenting every city, town, and village. This is what I love to do.” Taryn Smith

I recently put together an epic trip to Oudtshoorn, 4 days and nights jam-packed with some of the best this area has to offer!

The trip started out at this stunning location, AfriCamps Klein Karoo. A “boutique” camping experience with all the feeling of the outdoors combined with the luxury you want on a vacation.

We arrived in the dark, after a 2 hour delay caused by roadworks along Cogmanskloof. I was really annoyed by this fact because I really wanted to get some sunset shots, but then I focused on the benefit of it. What could I possibly find beneficial about arriving in the dark? Well, this way I got to experience this place twice in my very short stay here…

We couldn’t see anything beyond the tent, so my first encounter with AfriCamps was in the dark where my entire focus for the evening was on how cool our tent was, sitting around the fire with friends making a potjie dinner, and looking up at the stars.

The next morning I got my second encounter, a breathtaking view in every direction! Free-roaming game, mountains, and right in front of me a big beautiful dam with pairs of Egyptian geese gliding across it.

I wish we’d had more time here, they have so much to offer! The accommodation is on a working Ostrich farm, you can go on a tour, or a sunset drive, and they even have a stargazing tour! They also do pre-order meals for breakfast, lunch and/or dinner. Hopefully we’ll be back soon and we can try it all out, and in summer so we can swim in the dam!

The host, Esti, is an absolute sweetheart. She happily showed us around even though we arrived late and she let us borrow her potjie pot for the evening. It was a great night under the stars with the kids, set to the backtrack of buck in the distance, and an amazing view to wake up to in the morning!

Situated just outside Oudtshoorn town on the road to the Cango Caves it’s in perfect proximity to any and every activity you can think of, making it a great base camp. I can’t wait to go back!
