The Butterfly Centre and their current project

Visitors to AfriCamps at Stanford Hills or the charming Tasting Room restaurant may already know The Butterfly Centre, a centre for specialised education located in Stanford. AfriCamps at Stanford Hills camp owners, Jami and Peter Kastner started the organisation in 2013, in honour of their youngest son Sam whom they tragically lost that same year. The school opened its doors on 20 July 2014, on what would have been young Sam’s third birthday.

The main goal of The Butterfly Centre is to help young girls and boys who do not fit into the mainstream educational system for a variety of reasons to reach their full potential. Each year hundreds of neuro-diverse children enter the mainstream education system where they do not receive the attention and care they need to properly deal with their condition. The wonderful team at The Butterfly Centre specializes in caring for children who fall somewhere on the autism spectrum (many of whom are undiagnosed) in an environment where they can not only receive proper individualized schooling and treatment but also thrive in a safe space. The full-time students who range between the ages six and thirteen, receive classes at the level and speed to suit their specific abilities. Classes include reading, writing, mathematics, art and basic sports coaching. The children of The Butterfly Centre have shown tremendous growth in their reading ability, writing skills and social interactivity as a direct result of the one-on-one educational approach.

The school has continued to grow annually, with a steady stream of enquiries from parents looking for options. No similar facility exists in the immediate area, and options are severely limited. Most of the current students cannot afford to pay full fees, and the centre relies largely on donations. Rental is a big expense, but they have found a way to ensure the lifelong viability of the project. So, The Butterfly Centre is embarking on an exciting journey to build a new permanent school on Stanford Hills Estate.

Here the children will have easy access to skills development through working with the products and animals on the farm, as well as working on their individual school programmes. Funds have been successfully raised to construct phase one of the building at Stanford Hills Estate, and building will begin in the near future. Sadly, many of the families in the area who most require help dealing with special needs do not have the financial resources necessary. More than 50% of current students at the Centre are unable to afford full fees. Further fundraising will always be a reality in order to ensure that these special children can each reach their personal full potential in a loving and happy environment, surrounded by their peers. This is where the raffle fundraiser plays a significant role. Every donation received contributes to the new school, its facilities and the quality of each student’s education.
