AFRICAMPS HOEDSPRUIT, LIMPOPO

At AfriCamps Hoedspruit, 11 boutique glamping tents are dotted around a large, serene dam that is frequently visited by nyala, zebra, kudu, waterbuck and bushbuck. The dam is also home to a large variety of bird species, making it ideal for birdwathing. Take in the tranquil views and birdsong from your outdoor wood-fired hot tub or waterside braai area. The dam is famous for catch-and-release specimen fishing where you can catch carp weighing over 10 kg, as well as bass, bream, and barbel! (Fish conservation is a top priority for us, so be sure to ask your host for our specimen fishing guidelines.) Bring your canoe for a peaceful paddle, or simply unwind with a drink by the pool. Our family-friendly camp offers an affordable Lowveld safari experience.

Essential to the AfriCamps Hoedspruit experience are our guided game drives and tours departing right from the camp! Choose between tours to Kruger National Park, nearby private game reserves, the Panorama Route, the Blyde River Canyon, a sunset game drive, a guided nature walk, or a local village tour complete with traditional cuisine. For more details, check out the Tours & Safaris dropdown menu towards the bottom of the page.

Situated near Kruger National Park and some of the country’s most renowned private game reserves for Big 5 viewing, Hoedspruit, located in the Greater Kruger area, has rightfully earned its title as the safari capital of South Africa. Nestled at the foot of the Klein Drakensberg Mountains, just west of Timbavati Game Reserve and Klaserie Nature Reserve, and within an hour of Kruger’s Orpen Gate, Hoedspruit is a prime safari location.

Besides the incredible wildlife, the region draws visitors eager to explore the breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage along the Panorama Route. This scenic route features some of the most stunning views, waterfalls, and natural wonders of the South African Lowveld. Must-see landmarks include Graskop Gorge, Pinnacle Rock, God’s Window, Wonder View, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, the Three Rondavels, and the Blyde River Canyon. Waterfalls such as Lone Creek Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, Sabie Falls, Forest Falls, Mac Mac Pools, Mac Mac Falls, Berlin Falls, and Lisbon Falls should also be on your itinerary. These spectacular sights can be enjoyed en route between AfriCamps Hoedspruit and AfriCamps at Mackers in Hazyview.

Combine all of this with South Africa’s best weather! December to February can reach up to 40˚C and winter months’ average temperature is 24˚C. Are you ready to soak up the African sun on safari in Limpopo?

Your Hosts

Your wonderful hosts, Louwtjie and Monica, look forward to welcoming you to their farm, where you can experience their piece of heaven in the Greater Kruger Lowveld.

The farm has been in the Roux family for over 70 years, having been bought in 1948. Louwtjie’s parents, Louw and Rebekka Roux, took over the farm in 1989 to retire.

Louwtjie, who is also a qualified guide, pursued his career in tourism and nature conservation in the Kruger National Park. In 1999, he dedicated himself to the family farm as the fourth generation to settle here, with the ambition to create a homely tourist destination. The farm has since become a popular fishing, nature, and safari destination, and, from 1 November 2019, the newest addition to AfriCamps Boutique Glamping.

For the Roux family, the opportunity to provide a travel destination that boasts comfort, style, homegrown hospitality, and rugged African bushveld has always been a dream. They consider it a privilege to offer a gateway to the Kruger National Park and the beautiful wilderness of the Lowveld, providing travelers with an unforgettable experience.

Malaria risk

Although Hoedspruit is a low risk malaria area, we recommend you consult your doctor about the necessary precautions, especially if you are visiting Kruger National Park during your stay. Your doctor will have the most up to date information about low, medium, and high risk areas.

Malaria is mosquito borne disease transmitted exclusively through the bite of the female Anopheles mosquito. The highest risk period is between November and April – the end of the summer rainy season.

Music

Out of consideration for fellow guests, no noise, parties or music is allowed in the camp unless the guest has booked the entire camp. This is a family-friendly camp and we aim to maintain a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere.

Activities on the Farm

Swimming

Go for a dip at the camp pool or unwind with a drink while watching from the poolside.

CANOEING

Guests are welcome to use the dam for rowing – the perfect place to angle from. Please bring your own canoes or kayaks and oars.

FOR THE KIDS

Guests are welcome to bring bicycles for the kids. The kids love cycling around the camp. Take the kids to see how the game is fed! Feeding of the game takes place between 17h00 and 18h00 daily.

FISHING

This AfriCamps location is perfect for avid fishermen as all 11 tents are located on the dam. This spot has been a favourite among local fishermen for years and you can catch carp, bass, bream, and barbel typically weighing up to 10 kg!

Please note the following important fishing rules – we love our fish!

Carp fishing: Only specimen anglers with the correct fishing gear are allowed to fish for carp. Fishing is strictly catch-and-release; no fish are allowed to be kept in keepnets. An unhooking mat is compulsory and available at the camp. Only weight slings – no lip grippers are allowed. Guests are only allowed to fish for carp with one hook and a swivel. The minimum line capacity is 15 lb/6.8 kg. Carp should be handled in the water only, using an unhooking mat and landing net. Do not hold fish by their gills. No breaking off. No carp sacks are allowed. No uncooked or dry bait is permitted.

Bass, bream and barbell fishing: All fish are catch-and-release. Please handle the fish respectfully. No throwing of fish, please release them in the water safely.

Please enquire from your host, Louwtjie for any specific fishing-related questions before arrival to make sure you have everything you need.

Fishing rates: Adults: R165 pp per day | Children: R50 pp per day (under 12 years)

WOOD-FIRED HOT TUBS

All 11 tents have their own wood-fired hot tub. A wood-fired hot tub is the purest form of relaxation. After a day of exploring, relax while listening to the calming crackle of the fire. Or use it as a splash pool on the hotter days. Hoedspruit can reach temperatures in the 40s, so the private splash pool will be the hero of your glamping site in summer.

AFRICAMPS MAGOEBASKLOOF, LIMPOPO

AfriCamps Magoebaskloof is located between Tzaneen and Haenertsburg in Limpopo, where 10 fully equipped boutique glamping tents overlook the mesmerising Magoebaskloof landscape. The tents are surrounded by lush gardens, farm dams, and exquisite bird species, where birders, hikers, and MTB enthusiasts can explore to their hearts’ content!

‘Kloof’ translates to gorge, and this gorge is spectacular in many ways. Magoebaskloof is a series of lush green valleys popularly known as ‘The Land of the Silver Mist’ due to the soft mist blanket often covering the valleys. It is this soft mist and good rainfall that create a thick forest blooming with amazing plant species. Streams, waterfalls, and dams dot the area. During your stay, you will catch glimpses of the lush Afromontane forest, eucalyptus, pine and tea plantations, and avocado, berry, and kiwi farms.

The camp lies just outside Haenertsburg at the popular Cheerio Gardens Wedding Venue. The property is best known for its exquisite gardens – the true passion of former owner and botanist, Sheila ‘Box’ Thompson, who began cultivating the gardens from scratch in 1946. The gardens have since blossomed into what they are today – one of South Africa’s most beautiful garden wedding venues.

Cherry blossoms, crab apple trees, azaleas, African ferns, and pin oaks invite you in, and the vibrant colors of hydrangeas, camellias, irises, and foxgloves flourishing in the spring are sure to win you over. The abundant birdlife comes as no surprise, with guests able to spot Green Twinspots, Barratt’s Warblers, White-starred Robins, Lemon Doves, the elusive Narina Trogon, and Half-collared Kingfishers during their stay. Samango monkeys jumping from tree to tree and the cheerful whistling of farm labourers add to the calm garden atmosphere. Guests can expect a good dose of rest for the soul!

The picturesque Haenertsburg, with its rolling grasslands, bright-coloured flowers, and European-influenced architecture, reminds guests of a Swiss village. The village and its immaculate gardens attract visitors from far and wide, offering a peaceful escape from the city. You’re sure to leave feeling relaxed and recharged.

Your Hosts

Meet Sarah, JJ and their son Ryder – your gracious hosts at AfriCamps Magoebaskloof!

The gorgeous Cheerio Gardens property has been family-owned for generations, with an inspiring history. In 1946, former owner and botanist Sheila ‘Box’ Thompson began cultivating the magnificent gardens that have become renowned for their stunning garden weddings. Seventy-five years later, the gardens are still the talk of the town. Today, owner Sarah Hillary is the heart and soul of Cheerio Gardens, continuing the legacy of her great aunt:

“Cheerio Gardens is a fascinating fairy tale of an eccentric woman who simply couldn’t live without flowers, and today we get to walk in her garden and enjoy her vision as her legacy lives on. As a child I used to spend weekends on the farm roaming around with my cousins, making forts and fairy houses. We loved taking swims in the dam and enjoyed stomping around in the reeds. It is a place where parents can bring their kids and let them be free.”

Sarah’s brothers and her husband, JJ, farm avocados – a major industry in the area. Sarah and JJ love sharing their property with guests and you can expect a very warm welcome as soon as you enter the farm. Having lived in Magoebaskloof for years, the family knows the area well and will guide you in the right direction whether you’re an avid hiker or mountain biker or simply want to explore some of the locals’ favourite spots.

Together, the family enjoys taking leisurely strolls to the dams, spotting rare birds on the farm, and popping in at Cheerio Café for their coveted pecan nut pie!

AFRICAMPS WATERBERG, LIMPOPO

Located in the heart of the Waterberg plateau in Limpopo, a tranquil bushveld safari awaits at AfriCamps Waterberg. Whether you like to relax and recharge, or a jam-packed adventure is more your speed, here you’re always surrounded by wildlife and tranquil bush scenery. The camp is only a 2.5-hour drive from Pretoria, 30 km northeast of Vaalwater, and invites you to experience the unspoiled wilderness of the Waterberg Biosphere. Surrounded by 2,500-hectare game reserve encompassing wetlands, open fields, bushy areas and a rocky ridge, the family-friendly AfriCamps Waterberg offers various exciting game viewing opportunities in a malaria-free environment.

**Please note that a field fire affected some areas of the property in September 2024. The field will recover quickly and new growth will soon begin to flourish. The game on the reserve was unaffected and all activities and tours will proceed as usual. The images on our website were taken prior to the fire.

Highlights on the reserve include horseback game viewing safaris, guided game drives, hiking, astronomy shows (hosted by camp owner, Dr. Phillip Calcott), and birdwatching. Guests can encounter giraffe, zebra, eland, wildebeest, roan, tsessebe, sable, buffalo, kudu, impala, blesbok, waterbuck and ostrich on the property. There is abundant birdlife, particularly close to the dams and wetlands. A “Culture Tour” of a nearby African village and a “Step into the Past” Tour that includes a visit to the historical Davidson House and the Herbert Baker-designed St John’s Church nearby is also on offer.

The property provides unique facilities that round off your bushveld experience perfectly. Cool off in the farm’s 15 m semi-heated swimming pool, challenge the family to a game of volleyball, and visit our lookout decks, Tree Tops, or the Aardvark deck for endless bushveld views. For the kids, the adventure playground is a firm favourite. With Waterberg’s hot summers and moderate winters, the camp is a year-round holiday or weekend destination.

Staying in one of AfriCamps’ 10 fully equipped boutique glamping tents allows guests to get closer to nature while enjoying life’s little comforts like a fully furnished open-plan kitchen, living and dining space, indoor fireplace, two separate bedrooms with luxurious extra-length queen-size beds, electric blankets, a private en suite bathroom with a spacious rain shower, outdoor wood-fired hot tubs on the decks, Wi-Fi, and 24/7 access to solar power.

So where exactly is the Waterberg? The Waterberg plateau, a very special part of South Africa, is a mountainous massif of approximately 654,033 hectares in north Limpopo Province, forming a sort of natural “castle” or inverted saucer with ramparts of rock formations around the edges. At the foothills of this castle are many towns: Modimolle, Mookgophong, Mokopane, Lephalale, Thabazimbi and Bela-Bela. The portals to the massif that forms the castle are all beautiful passes: Sandrivierspoort, Bakker’s Pass, Bokpoort, the Kloof Pass, the Beauty Road and other lesser-known access routes. There is archaeological evidence that the San and, much later, the Pedi, retreated to this haven in times of danger.

AfriCamps’ tents are situated along a ridge in the very heart of this plateau where the scenery is one of open vistas stretching to distant horizons bounded by the blue outlines of mountains and hills that form the ramparts of the Waterberg “castle”. The sparsely populated plains and bushland of this upland plateau are filled with wildlife and the beauty of unspoiled nature. The air is unpolluted and the water pure. The low level of light pollution contributes to this being one of the most perfect sites for astronomy in the country.

En route to AfriCamps Waterberg, you will pass Vaalwater, the only town on the plateau. Traditional South African hospitality can be encountered at several restaurants and the well-appointed Zeederberg Centre with well-stocked Spar, upmarket Black Mamba Curio Shop, Syringa Café and Carla’s renowned bakery cater for local and international guests. The number of game vehicles in Vaalwater reflects the nature of the Waterberg as a hidden paradise of private game reserves.

Hosts

AfriCamps Waterberg is situated on a 2,500-hectare private game reserve within the beautiful 15,000-square-kilometre Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, an area with low human density and large expanses of unspoiled wilderness recognised by UNESCO.

Your hosts are Philip and Juliet Calcott. Juliet is the fifth generation of her family to live and work on the property, which was purchased by the Baber family over 100 years ago. Philip’s background is as a physicist, with a particular passion for astronomy and the glories of the night sky. Since arriving in the bush 20 years ago, he has taken guests on more than 1,000 “Night Sky Safaris” – astronomy shows widely considered to be world-class. He would be delighted to take you on a personalised tour of the stunning wonders of the night sky.

Juliet has taught in local schools and has a deep love of the Waterberg, its nature, its history, and its people. Her father, Charles Baber, and her great-grandfather, Ted Davidson, were both men of energy, humor, and community spirit. Juliet has inherited a century-long treasure trove of stories of love, war, and community endeavour in the Waterberg, which informs her “Step into the Past” Tour.

With the diverse activities on offer, we are sure you’ll have a memorable experience at AfriCamps Waterberg, and we hope to welcome you soon!

“STEP INTO THE PAST” HISTORY TOUR

Join your host Juliet on her “Step into the Past” tour, including a visit to the historical Davidson House and the Herbert Baker-designed St John’s Church, and loads of stories from the community.

The tour begins at the camp, where tales of the past are shared through photos projected on a screen. From there, you’ll head to 24 Rivers, just 10 minutes away, to explore the Herbert Baker Church constructed by pioneers in 1914. Just across the street stands the Davidson house, built in 1910. This home has remained untouched since Juliet’s great-grandmother’s time, functioning much like a living museum. Liz Hunter, Juliet’s cousin who resides there, welcomes guests with scones and tea on the verandah after they’ve explored the many artifacts hanging on the stoep wall and the interior of the house. One notable attraction is the ox wagon once belonging to General Louis Botha. Discovered abandoned in the Drakensberg, it was transported to Ted Davidson who used it as a roving shop, trading goods with the Tswana people to the north. The tour ends at Liz Hunter’s art gallery, a stone’s throw from the house.

 R350 pp | Children (5-12 yrs): R175 pp
