AFRICAMPS AT MILORHO, MAGALIESBERG

AfriCamps at Milorho, named after the Tsonga word for “dreams” or “dreamer”, is situated amidst the ancient beauty of the Magaliesberg Mountains. Located on the northern slopes of the world’s fourth-oldest mountain range, and surrounded by pristine natural beauty, our 10 boutique glamping tents are nestled in a family fun reserve. Within two hours of Johannesburg and Pretoria, Milorho awaits you for a dreamy escape into tranquility, away from the hustle and bustle of busy city life.

With over 400 hectares of vast beautiful kloofs and awe-inspiring rock pools, you can experience nature’s freedom through comfortable walks or exciting hiking trails. Traverse through a beautiful gorge, cool off in the rock pools, and spot waterfalls, ancient Iron Age structures, and abundant flora and fauna. The rock formations are remarkable, making hiking the only way to truly experience the area’s geology, history, and natural beauty. Guests can also take a stroll through a beautiful fruit orchard, with over 1,000 trees, including grapefruit, oranges, lemons, limes, peaches, nectarines, plums, mangoes, almonds, pecan nuts, apricots, and guavas. A number of wild animals including blue wildebeest, duiker, the brown hyena, jackal, klipspringer, and reedbuck can be spotted on the farm. Additionally, Milorho boasts an arboretum and a stunning sculpture garden that showcases a remarkable collection of sculptures made from stone and iron. It also features a showroom at reception where Live Edge Wood Designs’ beautiful wooden pieces, crafted from sustainably sourced trees, are displayed and sold. There is also an inviting sparkling swimming pool at the camp that beckons for a refreshing dip on the warmer days. For the thrill seekers, AfriCamps at Milorho is only one hour from Pilansberg National Park and adjacent to Magaliesberg Canopy Tour.

Staying in one of AfriCamps’ 10 fully equipped boutique glamping tents allows guests to get closer to nature while enjoying life’s little comforts like a fully furnished open-plan kitchen, living and dining space, indoor fireplace, two separate bedrooms with luxurious extra-length queen-size beds, electric blankets, a private en suite bathroom with a spacious rain shower, outdoor wood-fired hot tubs on the deck, Wi-Fi, and air-conditioning.

Where exactly is Magaliesberg? Magaliesberg is one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world, formed by a volcanic eruption over two billion years ago. This ancient giant stretches over 120 kilometers from Pretoria in Gauteng to Rustenburg in North West province. The Magaliesberg acts as a natural border, separating the warm bushveld with its low grasslands and savannas to the north, and from the cooler highveld grasslands to the south. Its geology is characterised by quartzite formations formed from ancient sand deposits, with some of the oldest exposed volcanic rocks in the country. Over 120 different tree species thrive here, alongside a treasure trove of indigenous medicinal plants. Look a little closer and you might spot a troop of baboons or a shy leopard. The skies are a symphony of birdsong, with over 200 avian species calling the Magaliesberg home. The Cradle of Humankind, which is the birthplace of humanity, also lies within Magaliesberg. This area is rich in fossils and tools dating back 2.5 to 2.8 million years, and boasts famous discoveries such as Mrs. Ples and Little Foot. Steeped in history and brimming with adventure, Magaliesberg continues to attract explorers seeking an escape from the city and a chance to reconnect with nature’s embrace.
