ZULULAND
Nestled within Pongola Game Reserve, Africa’s oldest private game reserve, birdwatching at AfriCamps at White Elephant Safaris is a year-round treat in the heart of Zululand. The reserve’s diverse habitats, including woodland, riverine forest, open savannah, and the shores of Lake Jozini, support an impressive variety of bird species throughout the year. Spring to early summer (October – December) – Peak birding season, with breeding activity at its highest and migratory species arriving in the region. During a bird ringing project conducted in November 2023, 470 individual birds representing 80 species were recorded, highlighting the area’s remarkable bird diversity. Thanks to the reserve’s proximity to Lake Jozini, birdwatching remains rewarding throughout the year, with excellent opportunities to spot both waterbirds and woodland species in every season.

Set on a working dairy farm just outside Wilderness, AfriCamps at Oakhurst is ideally positioned for exploring one of South Africa’s premier birding destinations. Within minutes of camp, you’ll have access to indigenous forest, riverine habitat, estuaries and wetlands, making it an excellent base for targeting Garden Route specials and a diverse range of waterbirds. Set within a 2,000-hectare private nature reserve in the Langeberg Mountains, AfriCamps at Pat Busch is home to more than 100 bird species across mountain fynbos, wooded streams and tranquil dams. Explore the hiking trails in search of fynbos endemics, listen for the call of the African Fish Eagle, and watch weavers nesting along the reed-lined waterways.
Best time for birding:
Birding is rewarding throughout the year, but the cooler months from August to November are particularly rewarding. Wildflowers transform the fynbos during spring, resident birds become more active, and many species are easier to spot.
