AFRICAMPS AT STANFORD HILLS, STANFORD

Glamping on one of Stanford’s leading wine and protea flower farms

BOOK NOW!

Come indulge in delicious local food and wine while glamping at AfriCamps at Stanford Hills. This dog-friendly camp is set on a boutique wine farm in Stanford, an exciting slow food destination where the chef serves an array of meals fresh from the farm. We have 10 glamping tents situated on the foothills of the Klein River Mountain range. AfriCamps at Stanford Hills is only a 15-minute drive from Hermanus and can be reached from Cape Town in two hours.

Stanford Hills Estate is fast becoming one of the area’s most popular attractions. Aside from offering tastings and sales of their award-winning range of wines, there are a variety of other activities and attractions. The restaurant, The Tasting Room, is set above a dam with views over the Stanford Valley. The restaurant has a reputation for laid back fun, with the emphasis on fresh and inventive food of an exceptionally high standard. The chalkboard menu changes daily according to what is locally fresh and available, including items from their own vegetable garden. The farm also produces Proteas and Pincushions, which are endemic to South Africa, so from August through November the farm is filled with these colourful blooms. The farm offers horse riding and hiking, plus you can have a swim in the farm dam, try your hand at fishing, or simply lie in bed and listen to the birds.

The charming town of Stanford is overlooked by the Klein River Mountains. It is famous for its award-winning eateries and has an eclectic mix of art galleries, breweries and wine farms, all with fantastic views of this valley area. Stanford is in close proximity to Hermanus, considered one best whale watching destinations in the world and a treat for adventurous as there are mountain biking trails, horse riding, shark cage diving and boat cruises, all within the area.

Your Hosts

Peter and Jami Kastner are the owner-managers who live on the farm with their two young boys, Jack and Alex (winemakers-in-training). Peter owned a restaurant and Jami a flower export company before 2005, when they sold up and invested with a couple of friends into what was then a portion of Weltevrede Farm, with four hectares of Pinotage for small production and one self-catering cottage for rental. Today the estate is known as Stanford Hills, with six wine labels exported to 11 countries, a 100 seater restaurant, and accommodation for 57 people. The farm is also a popular venue for weddings and hosts a variety of fun events, including their winter craft beer festival and the Stanford Stumble in November.

Peter has no formal wine training, but has learned on the job, with what he describes as a pretty steep learning curve! He does most work by hand in the small cellar set in one half of an aircraft hangar on the farm and believes in minimum interference to allow the grapes to express their own unique characteristics. He believes in the quality of the grapes, which are slow ripening due to the cool sea breezes in the area, and carefully managed to give optimum yield. As he says “It’s possible to make a bad wine from good grapes, but there is no way you can make good wine if your grapes aren’t up to scratch.”

Jami manages the Tasting Room, the estate restaurant, where the kids often help out too. She is a published author of Sam and Me and the Hard Pear Tree, published by Jacana, and has recently opened The Butterfly Centre in Stanford. This centre is a non-profit organisation offering a variety of beneficial activities for children in the area with special needs.

Activities on the Farm

Swimming
Guests can swim in the dam in front of your tent.

Fishing
If you have your equipment with you, try some bass fishing in the top dam (catch and release).

Trail walks/mountain bike trails
Keep a lookout for signs pointing to the different walk and mountain bike trails on the property. There are two circular trails to explore. The 5 km red trail passes the tents, so you can start and finish at the tent. There is also a 2 km yellow trail. Don’t forget to bring your mountain bike to explore some trails on the property.

Wine tasting
Stanford Hills first became recognised for top-quality Pinotage in very small quantities and has since grown into a boutique wine farm to be reckoned with. We now also produce a Sauvignon Blanc, a Shiraz, and a Chardonnay under the Stanford Hills label, as well as the popular Veldfire range. Wine tasting of our various wines is offered daily at our restaurant, The Tasting Room.

Horse riding
Half-hour and full-hour horse rides available through African Horse Company.

Casa Cello

Make sure to visit Casa Cello, the restaurant at Stanford Hills Estate, led by the talented Chef Jose Marinho. Stop by to enjoy a delectable meal and explore a mouthwatering menu that offers something for everyone—from delicious platters and wood-fired pizzas to fresh seafood and specialty dishes. A dining experience at Casa Cello is not to be missed!

Wood-fired hot tubs
Our boutique glamping tents offer the exclusive use of a private outdoor wood-fired hot tub situated next to the tent. A wood-fired hot tub is the purest form of relaxation. Soak up the beautiful surroundings while listening to the calming crackle of the fire, or take a dip to cool down during the summer months.

Exploring the Area

Hiking trails
Gansbaai Harbour to Klipgat Cave
A beautiful and fairly easy hiking trail is the 7.7 km Gansbaai Harbour to Klipgat Cave hike. It starts from the Gansbaai harbour and passes through limestone-rock vegetation and past several larger and smaller caves and coves. At the end of the trail, you find the best known of the caves, Klipgat, which was named for its remarkable window-like openings that offer spectacular views of the bay and sea.

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve
Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is a haven for nature lovers. It is a spectacular area offering guided walks, whale watching, horse riding, nature drives, and birding.

Phillipskop mountain hike and rock paintings
Take the 30 to 40 minutes hike to visit the only recorded rock art on the Cape Whale Coast at Phillipskop! The paintings are thousands of years old and are any historian’s delight.

Get on the water
Shark cage diving and whale watching
The Great White House is the ideal one-stop centre for extreme adventure tourists and marine lovers from across the globe. Shark cage diving and whale watching trips are the most popular and must be pre-booked.

Cruises down the Klein River
Take a slow boat down the Klein River, put your feet up, relax with a picnic, or get your binoculars out and see the amazing birdlife. There are a few operators to choose from, check Stanford Tourism for more info.

Delicious experiences
Kleinriver Cheese and Picnic Farmstead
The deli-style Kleinriver Picnic Shed is filled with local produce, wine, beer, and a mountain of artisanal cheese which you can taste.

Manor House Restaurant
Praised as one of the Cape’s top country dining spots and ranked in the top 10% of restaurants worldwide, Manor House is a culinary gem with a menu that spans breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Beer tasting
Birkenhead Brewery started as one of the first craft breweries in South Africa. Visit the working craft brewery and pub-style restaurant for tours, tastings, and take home your own draught or bottled beers.

Explore a local market
The Sunset Market takes place on the last Friday of each month from September to May on the old Market Square, 18h00 to 20h00. Meet the locals, buy some delicious local food, listen to live music, and spend a few hours perusing the stalls.
