AFRICAMPS AT OAKHURST, WILDERNESS
Glamping on a working dairy farm at the heart of the Garden Route
AfriCamps at Oakhurst is situated on Oakhurst Farm, one of the few remaining large working farms along the Garden Route, covering an impressive 640 hectares – 200 of which are pristine fynbos and indigenous forest. The eight AfriCamps tents offer stunning views over rolling green fields and the majestic Outeniqua Mountains, blending the breathtaking Wilderness with the Garden Route’s lesser-known farm lifestyle. Grazing cows and horses add to the authentic farm experience.
At Oakhurst, there’s no shortage of healthy outdoor activities to keep you and your children entertained. The tents overlook grassy fields where you might spot our dairy cows. Try your hand at fishing or take a canoe out on our large farm dam near the dairy. Enjoy the views of the Outeniqua Mountains from your private outdoor wood-fired hot tub next to each tent – it’s the perfect way to unwind while soaking in the surroundings. On hot summer days, the tub doubles as a splash pool!
For those who enjoy cycling or trail running, the farm features kilometres of well-maintained single tracks through the forest. The farm’s majestic waterfall provides an adventurous hiking destination. Children can visit Oakhurst Dairy to watch cows being milked and calves being fed in their pens, either in the early morning or afternoon.
The Wilderness area offers guests the chance to explore the iconic Garden Route, renowned for its unspoiled beaches, rivers, lakes, and lagoons – truly a nature lover’s paradise. The famous ‘Map of Africa’ viewpoint at Wilderness Heights provides a breathtaking vista of the Kaaimans River valley, while Dolphin Point at the top of Kaaimans Pass offers magnificent ocean views and regular sightings of whales and dolphins during the season.
There is so much to do in the area that visitors will be spoilt for choice. Hiking, dolphin and whale watching, hang gliding, paragliding, horse riding, mountain biking, scenic drives, the Wilderness Lakes Art Route, and ferry cruises all deserve a spot on your Wilderness bucket list. For those who enjoy shopping, Wilderness also features many craft markets selling beautiful, locally made items.

The farm is operated commercially by Jake and his wife Claire, who live on the property with their three daughters. The Crowther family are sixth-generation descendants of the original purchaser, Henry Dumbleton. Oakhurst Farm boasts a rich history spanning 180 years, with original structures including the forge (now accommodation), the farmhouse (now part of the main homestead), the chapel, the old graveyard, and the water mill. These were all established by Henry’s brother, Walter, between 1840 and 1870, highlighting Oakhurst’s enduring heritage.
Jake manages the various farm projects and the dairy operation, while Claire, with her keen eye for detail, oversees the management, redecoration, and renewal of the farm’s hospitality offerings.
After years of discussions, it was finally the right moment for AfriCamps and the Crowther family to realise their shared vision of an AfriCamps on this beautiful property.
