AfriCamps Addo, Eastern Cape

Welcome to AfriCamps Addo, the first AfriCamps Boutique Glamping location in the Eastern Cape. Nestled among thickets of indigenous fynbos, overlooking forested hills and gorges, 14 fully equipped boutique glamping tents offer the perfect base for adventure, wildlife, and relaxation.

Located on the beautiful Hayterdale Trails property on the foothills of the Zuurberg Mountains, the camp offers easy access to 50 km of scenic mountain biking, trail running, and hiking routes through Yellowwood forests and over rolling hills of valley bushveld dotted with ancient cycads. Spot over 160 bird species, and even catch a glimpse of sable and nyala in the property’s conservancy. For an authentic Big 5 safari experience, visit the Addo Elephant National Park, just 10 km away.

AfriCamps Addo boast two tent designs: our classic tents that sleep up to five guests, and our brand-new premium tents that are designed specifically for couples seeking an extra touch of style. All tents have spacious L-shaped decks, outdoor wood-fired hot tubs, and unparalleled views of the natural surroundings.

For many, the name ‘Addo’ has become synonymous with elephants and other wildlife due to the proximity of the Addo Elephant National Park. In addition to the wildlife, Addo offers other activities that cater to families, couples and groups of friends alike – from birdwatching and hiking to mountain biking and fishing.

Your Hosts

AfriCamps Addo is located at the foothills of the Zuurberg Mountains on the Hayterdale Trails property, a short 15-minute drive from the renowned Addo Elephant National Park. At Hayterdale, adventure awaits around every corner. The lush valley thicket and Zuurberg Mountains provide the perfect backdrop for an array of activities that showcase the unique beauty and diverse terrains of this corner in the Eastern Cape.

Hayterdale was founded by brothers Rob and Trevor Hayter, whose family has farmed in the Zuurberg Mountains since the 1950s. Trevor and his son Matthew had the idea of creating mountain biking trails as a way to stay active while doing something they both enjoyed – mountain biking. The pre-existing jeep tracks in the Zuurberg Mountains didn’t showcase the many breathtaking areas, so the Hayters started building their own single tracks and course outlines. In 2008, a mountain biking mecca was born from the Hayter men’s shared passion for mountain biking and the area’s natural beauty. The farm has since grown into a popular MTB destination hosting various trail events throughout the year. Combined with its remarkable natural beauty, this location is just the spot to embrace adventure, or simply unwind. Today, the Hayter family takes every chance they get to visit the property they built and enjoy reaping the fruits of their labour. When they are not on the property, they leave it in the capable hands of Liezel and her friendly team.

Mountain biking, trail running, and hiking are the heart of Hayterdale Trails. It’s a way to showcase our beautiful country, spend time with friends or family, and reconnect with nature.

The Addo Team is excited to welcome you and make sure your stay is filled with comfort, enjoyment, and unforgettable memories!

Activities on the Farm

MOUNTAIN BIKING

Explore 50 km of mountain bike trails against the backdrop of the picturesque Zuurberg Mountains. Our routes cover a diverse range of terrain including marathon trails, cross-country tracks, and gravel jeep tracks.

E-BIKE RENTAL

Explore 50 km of mountain bike trails at your own pace with our e-bike rentals. Enquire and book at reception.

Half-day rental: R400 pp
Full day rental: R700 pp

Marathon trails

Our marathon routes are designed to provide an enjoyable and customisable riding experience. Starting and ending at the same point, riders have the flexibility to choose two or more routes. Begin with the green route and progress to the red route, and complete the journey with the blue route, or do laps of the loop. For those seeking a challenging ride, you can ride the red route twice to cover 50 km with an elevation gain of over 1,200 m.

We use Trailforks to map our trails and improve the accessibility of the trails. To navigate our trails seamlessly, we recommend using Trail Forks in conjunction with our trail markers.

Green Route – 10 km of family fun!
The Green Route is suited for those who want to take their kids and their families on a flat scenic route. It is a great route to share the scenic Zuurberg with your whole family. This route includes 9 trails. This route climbs 155 m with a max elevation of 221 m then descends 155 m.

Blue Route – 10 km for the intermediate rider!
The Blue Route is ideal for riders seeking a moderate challenge without committing to the longer Red Route. The single-track climb to the top of the ridge offers breathtaking views of Hayterdale and Addo Elephant Park. Prepare for one of the most exhilarating descents with Zolile’s Roller Coaster, one of the best single-track descents on Hayterdale. Follow the single track back to the Hayterdale camp and enjoy the ride!

Red Route – 25 km for the pros!
The Red Route offers a challenging ride for those seeking an unforgettable experience in Hayterdale. The route takes you up Zuurberg Pass, along a long and winding single track hugging the west side of the mountain. Enjoy the stunning panoramic view of Hayterdale, Addo Elephant Park, and Nelson Mandela Bay before descending along the scenic seaview trails into the valley of Hayterdale. Once you hit the Hayterdale flats, it’s time to pick up speed before heading up the last climb of the day outside the Hayterdale camp. To complete your ride, cross Deon’s Bridge and ascend the small hill within the Hayterdale Camp.

Cross-country track

The Cross Country track at Hayterdale has been the venue for numerous provincial and national races. This exciting track features drops, rock gardens, jumps, berms, and everything in between, making it perfect for riders of all skill levels. With three challenging climbs and total enclosure within the Hayterdale game camp, the Cross Country track promises an unforgettable ride.

Gravel road

Gravel riding is becoming increasingly popular, and although we haven’t specifically catered to this discipline in the past, our abundance of jeep tracks and gravel roads in the area are sure to satisfy any Gravel Grinder’s appetite.

Trail Running

Experience the thrill of connecting with nature through the sport of trail running. Whether you’re scaling the summit of Zuurberg pass or standing atop the GZT bridge, the breathtaking views of orchards, Addo Elephant National Park, and Nelson Mandela Bay will leave you awe-struck.

The Hayterdale 21 km classic route features a perfect blend of speedy downhills, challenging climbs, and breathtaking views. You may just find yourself wondering if you want to do it all over again!

Our trail running routes start and finish at the same point, allowing you to seamlessly transition from one route to the next. If you enjoy a particular route, feel free to do laps of the loop. Every trail we’ve built has been individually mapped on Trailforks, enabling you to handpick and create your own private routes as you become more familiar with the area. The possibilities are endless!

Hiking Trails

Get lost in the beauty of Hayterdale’s densely wooded valleys or enjoy stunning views from grassland plateaus where ancient cycads and cabbage trees dot the dramatic cliff edges. Keep an eye out for bushbuck, reebok, spiral-horned kudu, and a diverse range of birds, including the majestic Verreaux’s and Martial eagles.

Birding

Nestled in a lush valley thicket at the base of Zuurberg Mountains, the camp offers the perfect setting for birdwatching enthusiasts, boasting a diverse range of over 160 bird species. Wander through a variety of habitats like the lush thicket, the dense forest, the peaceful woodland, and the grassy Fynbos to spot birds and enjoy their song.

Wood-fired Hot Tubs

All 14 tents offer the exclusive use of their own outdoor wood-fired hot tub. A wood-fired hot tub is the purest form of relaxation. Soak up the stunning surroundings while listening to the calming crackle of the fire, or take a dip to cool down on hotter days.

4 SQUARE HANDBALL

Guests can enjoy a game of handball right at the camp! This fun, fast-paced activity is perfect for all ages – test your reflexes, challenge your friends, and enjoy some friendly competition. Great fun for both kids and adults!

FOOTGOLF

A playful mix of soccer and golf that’s fun for everyone! Players kick a soccer ball toward holes on a course, aiming to complete each “par” in as few kicks as possible. It’s active, social, and perfect for a laugh with family or friends.

Exploring the Area

Spot the Big 7

Spot the Big 7 at Addo Elephant National Park, the only park to include them all! Enjoy an unforgettable cruise during whale watching season (June to December) with Raggy Charters and spot dolphins, seals, seabirds, southern right whales, and great white sharks as you explore Algoa Bay with the possibility of encountering all of the Big 7.

Addo Elephant NATIONAL Park

The main attraction of Addo is undoubtedly the Addo Elephant National Park, a sanctuary for wildlife that is home to Africa’s elusive Big 5: elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos, and buffalos. One of the most popular ways to explore the park is through guided game drives, where visitors are led by expert rangers who offer insights into the park’s flora and fauna. For those who prefer to take things at their own pace, Addo also allows self-guided game drives. Take a break and enjoy a bush picnic amidst the stunning scenery at one of several picnic spots along the way. Visitors can also opt to explore the park on foot and get close to the peaceful natural landscape along hiking trails while accompanied by experienced guides.

4×4 Adventures

The Bedrogfontein 4×4 Trail in the Addo Elephant National Park offers an exhilarating ride through diverse vegetation types. You’ll encounter riverine thicket, Afromontane forest, fynbos on the peaks, and the arid Nama-Karoo of the Darlington area. The trail is strictly for 4×4 vehicles with good ground clearance and low range. The route, which takes 5 to 6 hours excluding stops and side diversions, can only be driven from east to west. It’s rated Grade 1 through 3, making it suitable for intermediate and experienced drivers.

This route has a rich history, having been the site of fierce battles between British and Boer troops during the Anglo-Boer War. Be sure to visit the Jan Smuts cottage where the legendary soldier was in a coma after eating cycad seeds. The area is also home to scattered rock art paintings, adding to the fascinating cultural and historical experience.

Boat Trips in the Sundays River

Experience the diverse biomes of the Greater Addo region on a relaxing boat trip along the Sundays River with Sundays River Adventures. The riverbank is densely populated by Albany thicket, providing habitats for various species of colorful birds including sunbirds, ospreys, and fish-eagles. Keep an eye out for small buck and vervet monkeys as you travel upstream.

Sunset Cruise

After a day spent navigating through the majestic elephants and rare flightless dung beetles of Addo Elephant National Park, there’s nothing like a peaceful boat trip to unwind. It’s also an excellent way to witness one of Addo’s most notable natural wonders – the expansive Alexandria Dune Field. This unspoiled coastal dune field is still expanding and is the largest in the world. On sunset cruises along the serene Sundays River with Sundays River Adventures, guests can take in the stunning views of the estuary at the river mouth and disembark at the highest dunes. For the energetic, a hike to the summit rewards with panoramic vistas of Addo Elephant National Park’s marine protected zones and islands. Keep your eyes peeled for African fish eagles, ospreys, small bucks, and vervet monkeys along the southern bank’s dense riverine thicket. It’s the perfect way to end a day with a quintessential African sunset.

Big Swing or King Swing in Addo

The Giant Swing is an 18-metre-high, insanely thrilling ride that will give you a few seconds of free fall. You’ll scream, laugh, cry or go silent – it’s the ultimate rush. If you’re an adrenaline junkie, it’s a must-do!

Fishing Near Addo on the Sundays River

Addo and its surroundings offer spectacular fishing opportunities such as freshwater, surf, deep-sea, and fly fishing. The coastal area boasts excellent cob fishing, with catches weighing up to 67 kg. The Sundays River Estuary is a scenic location, attracting anglers to its dune-backed banks.

Sandboarding & Sand Sledding

The Alexandria Coastal Dunes provide a thrilling spot for sand sledding and sand boarding. After the exciting rides with Sundays River Adventures, take a dip in the peaceful lagoon formed by the Sundays River.

Brave the Longest Double Zip Line

Brave the heights of the Sundays River Valley and hop on to the highest, longest and fastest double zip line in South Africa. Enjoy stunning views of the valley, game reserves, and mountains in the distance. Couples and families can experience the fun together as two zip lines run parallel to each other.

Visit Addo Wildlife

Experience the wildlife of Addo at the newest addition to the region – Addo Wildlife. Enjoy a meal at the Tangelo Restaurant, learn about rescued animals, feed farm animals, and take a walk through the aviary.

Your Hosts

Even before AfriCamps opened on the farm, Gowan Valley Guest Farm and owners, Brett and Deanne Bouwer, have earned a stellar reputation for their charming farm accommodation in the heart of the Midlands Meander. In 2019 Brett and Deanne Bouwer joined the AfriCamps team and we couldn’t be happier to branch out to the captivating Natal Midlands – our first camp in the province.

How did it all begin? We have our wonderful camp in Wilderness to thank for that! Being keen campers themselves (in the more rustic sense of the word), the Bouwers were quite intrigued by the idea of adding a glamping option to their property. They were already looking for a new and interesting accommodation offering for their farm when they saw the AfriCamps tents for the first time. On a family holiday along the Garden Route, the Bouwers visited old friends, Jake and Claire Crowther, who just happen to be the owners of our camp in Wilderness! Although our Wilderness tents were still being built at the time, the Bouwers knew AfriCamps’ fully equipped glamping tents were going to be the perfect match on their beautiful Natal Midlands farm. Less than a year later, we opened five tents on Gowan Valley Guest Farm!

AFRICAMPS CHAMPAGNE VALLEY, DRAKENSBERG

AfriCamps Champagne Valley offers guests of all ages an exciting close-to-nature experience on the foothills of the Drakensberg, which means loads of adventure and exquisite natural beauty are in store. The sheer scale of the Drakensberg can only be experienced first-hand – whether you seek the reward of the views from the top, or are perfectly happy unwinding to the views of the mountain in the distance. Only 245 km from Durban and 400 km from Johannesburg, this camp is a perfect weekend or holiday destination.

The property is a hiker’s paradise with the popular Monk’s Cowl entrance to the Maloti-Drakensberg National Park only 7 km from the farm. Guests can also enjoy overnight hikes like Champagne Castle, Cathedral Peak, and Injisuthi, or book a customised hike with a local licensed guide.

Apart from hiking, the area boasts an array of other outdoor activities including birding, mountain biking trails, hot air ballooning, ziplining, horse riding, golfing, beer tasting, and chocolate tasting. Sumptuous traditional braai meals at the on-site restaurant, The Farm Kitchen, are a must for your itinerary, and don’t miss the chance to hear the Drakensberg Boys Choir perform live! The property also makes the perfect spot for tying the knot and hosting weddings with accommodation available at the guest lodge and the AfriCamps tents.

On the farm, explore the forest where various bird species can be spotted, unwind at the eco farm pool soaking up the mountain views, or recharge from the comfort of your private outdoor wood-fired hot tub.

Where exactly is Champagne Valley? Champagne Valley is located in the Central Drakensberg, KwaZulu-Natal. The Drakensberg Mountain Range stretches an impressive 300 km between Lesotho and KwaZulu-Natal. The name translates to ‘Dragon Mountain’ but is simply referred to as the ‘Berg’ by locals. The ecologically and culturally diverse Drakensberg is home to the highest mountain peaks in the country and has been declared a world heritage site. The flat-topped Cathkin Peak (3,149 m) and Champagne Castle (3,248 m) are two of these peaks, and the valley below it is referred to as Champagne Valley. The area is a world-famous destination for hiking, mountain biking, and rock climbing.

Your Hosts

Meet Kevin and Chantal, whose hospitality journey began with a tranquil visit to the Drakensberg mountains. It was in this peaceful setting that they envisioned a sanctuary far from the city’s hustle and bustle, a place where guests could breathe pure mountain air and craft lasting memories. Kevin and Chantal also like to enjoy a break away from their city life in Durban and take every opportunity they can to escape to the farm and enjoy the magic of the mountains

With steadfast determination, they transformed Inkosana from its humble beginnings into a charming lodge, situated on a 20-hectare property offering breathtaking views of the majestic Drakensberg mountains. Their vision is to transition the lodge into a boutique hotel and to become a firm favourite for weddings and conferences in the area.

Kevin comes with a rich background in property, while Chantal has spent a decade in banking and finance before stepping into the real estate realm. Together, they’ve become a dynamic duo in tourism and hospitality for the past ten years.

Kevin and Chantal cherish the vision of creating opportunities for their dedicated staff and their families and they take pride in the fact that local communities and small businesses will benefit from AfriCamps’ guests. “As we grow, so does our community, reflecting the ‘Ubuntu’ spirit of our beautiful country.” Guests are welcomed by Limahl and his passionate team.

Joining the AfriCamps family marks the start of a new chapter for the property, offering visitors an unforgettable passage through the captivating landscapes of the Drakensberg.

From the brilliant-green flash of a malachite sunbird to the lively chorus of masked weavers, you’ll have the chance to witness the majesty of the rare black eagle, martial eagle, lammergeyer (bearded vulture), or lanner falcon in their natural habitat. Falcon Ridge, a bird of prey centre, offers insightful shows demonstrating these magnificent birds in action after being rehabilitated from injury.

Drakensberg Boys Choir

No visit to the ‘Berg’ is complete without experiencing the world-famous Drakensberg Boys Choir. The 600-seater Ken MacKenzie auditorium, located just 2.5 km from our camp, hosts concerts every Wednesday during the school term. To secure your spot, be sure to book your tickets in advance. Drakensberg Boys Choir School (DBCS) builds character, moulding and developing boys to harness the gift of music to bring hope, impact, and positive change in South Africa and beyond. DBCS offers a unique, complete, and diverse schooling experience that will forever change every Drakie boy’s life by being part of this centre of excellence.

Cathedral Peak Wine Estate

Just a sip away, Cathedral Peak Wine Estate has been perfecting Pinotage and Merlot in the shadow of the ‘Berg’ since 2007. As custodians of the soil, they nurture what grows in it, resulting in exquisite wines that you can savour. As you sample some wine on their veranda, your gaze will drift over the sprawling vineyards, and the large dam below.

Monks Cowl Park

Named after the peak nestled between Champagne Castle and Cathkin Mountains, Monks Cowl Park is your gateway to the Maloti-Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site. Here, you’ll find breathtaking vistas, from sweeping grasslands in the lower reaches to towering cliffs and a cascading waterfall that stretches for hundreds of meters. Monks Cowl is the ideal destination for hiking, day walks, or simply enjoying a light meal at the tea garden.

Drakensberg Brewery

Drakensberg Brewery‘s brewpub offers a front-row seat to the stunning Drakensberg mountains. It’s the perfect spot to kick back, relax, and quench your thirst. They also offer a DIY platter menu, giving you the freedom to craft the perfect combination from a range of cold meats, cheeses, pickles, and preserves.

Scootours® Drakensberg Adventures

Experience the breathtaking beauty of the mountains in an exciting new way with Scootours® Drakensberg. Their non-motorised scooters provide an eco-friendly mode of transport, taking you through awe-inspiring mountain paths with views of the landscapes. A 4×4 vehicle will take you up the mountain, where you’ll be briefed on scooter operations. Each tour lasts from 90 minutes to 2 hours, making it a delightful adventure to fit into your schedule.

Flowers in the ‘Berg’

The Drakensberg region’s unique ecological diversity and climate result in a rich botanical tapestry. Our escarpment is home to about 2,200 plant species, nearly 400 of which are endemics – plants exclusive to this region. Designated a World Heritage Site in 2000, the area is globally recognised for its rich biodiversity, captivating landscapes, and ancient San rock paintings. While plants are a sight to behold all year round, they’re especially vibrant from November to February after the spring rains. At Inkosana Lodge, the indigenous gardens have flourished over the decades. Their water-wise, slow-growing trees have been nurtured patiently to provide a spectacular backdrop to the majestic ‘Berg’ views.

Overnight hike

Imagine a night under a canopy of stars or tucked away in a Drakensberg cave. At Inkosana Berg Lodge, we turn that dream into reality. Choose from guided overnight hikes ranging from one to four nights. We tailor each hike to your fitness level, ensuring a unique experience just for you. But remember, spots fill up fast, and advance bookings are crucial. More information is available under the Hiking in the Drakensberg dropdown menu.

Hiking in the Drakensberg

AfriCamps Champagne Valley is situated close to the start of various Drakensberg hiking trails ranging from easy strolls to strenuous adventures. These trails vary in length, from day hikes to overnight experiences lasting up to four nights for the seasoned hiker. Our knowledgeable staff are on hand to offer advice on the best Drakensberg day trips and beyond.

DAY HIKES

The Drakensberg, easily accessible from AfriCamps Champagne Valley, boasts a variety of day hikes and walks, including sites featuring Bushman paintings. Here are some top route suggestions:

  1. Monk’s Cowl: This area, centered around the Mpofane River valley, is nestled at the base of some of the Drakensberg’s most awe-inspiring peaks. The park’s well-maintained trails cater to all fitness and experience levels.
  2. Hlathikulu Forest Trail: For a more leisurely walk, the Hlathikulu trail meanders through indigenous forests and showcases a spectrum of Drakensberg wildflowers. Take a breather in the midst of the magnificent Nandi’s Falls and explore the tranquil pools along the Mpofane River.
  3. Cathkin Peak: This hike ascends past sandstone rock faces leading to grasslands at the base of Cathkin Peak. Here, you may spot Rhebok and Eland grazing. Don’t forget your binoculars to observe a diverse array of birdlife.

For the fit and seasoned hiker, two mountain peaks beckon as day hike challenges:

  1. Sterkhorn: After a 4-hour ascent, culminating in a rock scramble, you’ll stand atop Sterkhorn (2,970 m), offering unrivaled views, including the Devil’s Tooth and the Amphitheater to the north, and Giant’s Castle to the south.
  2. Champagne Castle: A more demanding 10-hour round trip takes hikers to the plateau of Champagne Castle (3,337 m), one of the Drakensberg’s loftiest peaks. Here, you can relax atop a 1,000 m drop, watching the rare bearded vultures soar.

AfriCamps Champagne Valley is a short drive from other iconic day-hiking areas of the Drakensberg:

  1. Cathedral Peak: A 45-minute drive from the camp, this region offers breathtaking hikes, including the Rainbow Gorge, where waterfall sprays create mesmerising rainbows.
  2. Battle Cave: Situated 45 minutes away by car in the Injisithu area, this cave showcases captivating Bushman rock art.
  3. Tugela River Gorge: Located in the Royal Natal National Park, a 90-minute drive away, this hike reveals the splendours of the Tugela River Gorge. A further drive and hike present the spectacular Tugela falls, Africa’s second-highest waterfall.
  4. Giant’s Castle: A short 1.5 km walk from the entrance gate, discover enchanting Bushman rock art caves and a museum depicting Bushman life. For the adventurous, the top of the Drakensberg escarpment is accessible via Langalibalele Pass.

OVERNIGHT HIKES

If sleeping under the stars or a night in a cave is on your bucket list, you’re in for a treat! The camp happily arranges guided day or overnight hikes ranging from one to four nights, led by a licensed guide. Learn more about overnight hikes here.

AfriCamps AT WHITE ELEPHANT SAFARIS, KZN

AfriCamps at White Elephant Safaris in Pongola Game Reserve, KwaZulu-Natal, is the perfect destination for a self-catering family getaway, where land-based and water-based guided safaris departing right from the camp are the highlights of your stay.

Pongola Game Reserve is the world’s second-oldest private reserve and the oldest in Africa, dating back to 1894. Nestled on the shores of the 15,000-hectare Lake Jozini and at the foot of the majestic Lebombo Mountains, you will find 12 fully equipped AfriCamps tents.

Enjoy an AfriCamps glamping getaway while experiencing all the thrills of an established private game reserve, where buffalo, elephant, rhino, leopard, hyena, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, warthog, 12 different antelope species, and over 350 bird species roam the plains and grace the skies. The occasional splashes of hippos, crocodiles, and tigerfish in Lake Jozini add to the excitement of a water-based safari experience. Safaris, guided bush walks, tiger fishing on Lake Jozini, and sundowners by the pool are just a few of the must-dos during your stay. Spend a day in the life of a rhino and elephant researcher, and uncover the mysteries of these majestic, yet vulnerable, creatures. The experiences at this camp are both thrilling and educational, offering visitors a unique insight into conservation.

To end your day, soak up the African sunset from your outdoor wood-fired hot tub, and if you’re lucky, antelope roaming among the tents may pay you a visit.

Your Hosts

Your friendly camp hosts look forward to your visit and will welcome you with open arms. Camp owners Dr. Heinz Kohrs, his wife Debbie, and their daughters – Kirstin, Andrea, and Clara – are eager to share their beautiful property with you. The White Elephant Safaris team also manages the bush camp, umKhaya Cottage, and the White Elephant Research Camp.

White Elephant Safaris is situated on Leeuwspoor Farm, where Dr. Heinz Kohrs grew up. The farm was purchased by Dr. Heinz’s father, a cattle farmer, in 1954. Passionate about conserving the remaining game species on the farm, he was awarded the Natal Parks Board Conservationist of the Year trophy in 1963. During this time, he requested 10 warthogs for reintroduction onto Leeuwspoor from Hluhluwe/Umfolozi Game Reserve. (Keep an eye out for one of these ‘Pumbas’ during your stay at AfriCamps at White Elephant Safaris).

Dr. Heinz shares his father’s passion for conservation and eco-tourism. He is dedicated to fostering responsible travel practices that prioritize environmental preservation, support local communities, and promote educational initiatives. Given his deep commitment to these principles, Dr. Heinz maintains a busy schedule, entrusting the camp’s operations to his capable team, who will ensure you have an amazing stay.

The camp is perfect for families, couples, or close friends who want to break away from the busy city. AfriCamps at Mackers is a peaceful oasis for those who enjoy birding, wildlife, the soothing Sabie river and the simple serenity of the Lowveld. Don’t miss the chance to book one of our guided Kruger and Panorama Route tours, departing right from your tent! Each tent has its own private outdoor wood-fired hot tub next to the tent!

Apart from the variety of exciting and adrenaline-filled attractions in the area, the camp’s sights and sounds are sure to win you over. Hear the bush babies and owls at night from the comfort of your fully equipped boutique glamping tent, walk a few metres to dip your toes in the soothing Sabie River, cast your fishing line, unwind by the beautiful infinity swimming pool under the warm Lowveld sun, or hike along the river to see wild rapids upstream.

The camp is perfectly positioned to spend at least a day in the Kruger National Park spotting the Big 5, or driving along the Panorama Route experiencing the breathtaking scenery. God’s Window, 3 Rondavels, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, and the Blyde River Canyon are all spectacular sights worth a visit. Your hosts, owners Ryan and Michelle McKain, will gladly arrange tours for both routes.

AfriCamps at Mackers is located in the beautiful Sabie Valley Nature Conservancy, which is home to more than 250 bird species. So, remember to bring your birding book and binoculars along, listen to birdsong from your riverside deck, or while enjoying a massage treatment.

The camp’s honesty shop adds a special touch to the experience. Kids can borrow a selection of games, such as 30 Seconds, Trivial Pursuit. Or find “The Mackers Playful Pursuit” pack in your tent, which contains cards, rummikub, dominoes and bananagrams. Mom and Dad can stock up on some essentials, and you can get ice lollies and cold drinks, too. Kids can enjoy time in the Kids Zone painting and drawing. Your Hosts

AfriCamps at Mackers is located in the beautiful Sabie Valley Nature Conservancy, between Sabie and Hazyview. Ryan and Michelle McKain – the “Mackers”, hail from the East Rand in Gauteng, where they both ran successful businesses. Ryan, a real sports fanatic, ran a screen printing business, and Michelle had a corporate promotional business. The farm was discovered while on a holiday to the Panorama Route and Kruger National Park. The couple is passionate about wildlife and avid birders, making this farm ideal as it has more than 250 species for them to watch.

The farm is only a 30-minute drive from the Phabeni Gate of the Kruger, so whenever time allows, they like to pop into the Kruger for a drive. Tired of the “mad Joburg rush”, they decided to invest in their piece of heaven and have been enjoying their decision ever since.

The farm offers absolute peace and tranquility, and both hosts enjoy the fact that they are able to share the beauty of their farm with visitors from all over the world. Ryan and Michelle have three sons who are not residents on the farm but take every opportunity to come back for a visit. First on the list is nature and beauty, but they also enjoy a game of golf at the Sabi River Sun Golf Club.

Check-in & Check-out

Check-in: From 14h00
Check-out: Before 10h00 on the day of departure

Contactless check-in is currently being practiced. Check-in and check-out procedures will be sent to the guest via email on confirmation of the booking.

Malaria risk

Although Hazyview is a low-risk malaria area, we recommend you consult your doctor about the necessary precautions, especially if you are visiting Kruger National Park during your stay. Your doctor will have the most up to date information about low, medium, and high risk areas.

Malaria is mosquito borne disease transmitted exclusively through the bite of the female Anopheles mosquito. The highest risk period is between November and April – the end of the summer rainy season.

Music

Out of consideration for fellow guests, no noise, parties or music is allowed in the camp unless the guest has booked the entire camp. This is a family-friendly camp and we aim to maintain a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere.

Activities on the Farm

Swimming

After a long day’s sightseeing or game viewing, a dip in our beautiful infinity pool is a great way to refresh and relax. Get a drink from the honesty shop and soak up the afternoon sun.

FISHING

Cast your fishing lines anywhere along the Sabie River and try your luck at catching Yellow Fish.

BIRDWATCHING

Birdlife is abundant on the farm, with over 250 species to admire.

Visitors can expect a memorable experience viewing thousands of crocodiles on a beautifully treed farm with abundant birdlife. Tours are available by prior arrangement.

EXPLORE THE MAGNIFICENT PANORAMA ROUTE

Take in the kaleidoscope of breathtaking scenery, natural beauty, and African diversity along this route. It includes God’s Window, Wonderview, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, Graskop, and the Three Rondavels overlooking the famous Blyde River Canyon.

BOURKE’S LUCK POTHOLES

At the confluence of the Blyde River and the Treur River lies Bourke’s Luck Potholes, thousands of years of water erosion have created a unique and otherworldly geological feature: huge cylindrical potholes in the sandstone bedrock. The result is a fascinating network of tunnels, tubes, and interconnected whirlpools.

GRASKOP GORGE

Graskop Gorge is an ideal stop for visitors. Enjoy the view, explore the forest, ride the 51 metre lift into the forest below, or partake in the various adventure activities offered. Don’t forget to sample the food while you’re there!

Now part of the Graskop Gorge Lift Centre, the Big Swing is the world’s highest cable gorge swing. Unlike a bungee jump, participants are strapped in an upright position in a full safety harness. AFRICAMPS HOEDSPRUIT, LIMPOPO

At AfriCamps Hoedspruit, 11 boutique glamping tents are dotted around a large, serene dam that is frequently visited by nyala, zebra, kudu, waterbuck and bushbuck. The dam is also home to a large variety of bird species, making it ideal for birdwathing. Take in the tranquil views and birdsong from your outdoor wood-fired hot tub or waterside braai area. The dam is famous for catch-and-release specimen fishing where you can catch carp weighing over 10 kg, as well as bass, bream, and barbel! (Fish conservation is a top priority for us, so be sure to ask your host for our specimen fishing guidelines.) Bring your canoe for a peaceful paddle, or simply unwind with a drink by the pool. Our family-friendly camp offers an affordable Lowveld safari experience.

Essential to the AfriCamps Hoedspruit experience are our guided game drives and tours departing right from the camp! Choose between tours to Kruger National Park, nearby private game reserves, the Panorama Route, the Blyde River Canyon, a sunset game drive, or a local village tour complete with traditional cuisine. For more details, check out the Tours & Safaris dropdown menu towards the bottom of the page.

Situated near Kruger National Park and some of the country’s most renowned private game reserves for Big 5 viewing, Hoedspruit, located in the Greater Kruger area, has rightfully earned its title as the safari capital of South Africa. Nestled at the foot of the Klein Drakensberg Mountains, just west of Timbavati Game Reserve and Klaserie Nature Reserve, Hoedspruit is a prime safari location.

Besides the incredible wildlife, the region draws visitors eager to explore the breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage along the Panorama Route. This scenic route features some of the most stunning views, waterfalls, and natural wonders of the South African Lowveld. Must-see landmarks include Graskop Gorge, Pinnacle Rock, God’s Window, Wonder View, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, the Three Rondavels, and the Blyde River Canyon. Waterfalls such as Lone Creek Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, Sabie Falls, Forest Falls, Mac Mac Pools, Mac Mac Falls, Berlin Falls, and Lisbon Falls should also be on your itinerary. These spectacular sights can be enjoyed en route between AfriCamps Hoedspruit and AfriCamps at Mackers in Hazyview.

Combine all of this with South Africa’s best weather! December to February can reach up to 40˚C and winter months’ average temperature is 24˚C. Are you ready to soak up the African sun on safari in Limpopo?

Your Hosts

Your wonderful hosts, Louwtjie and Monica, look forward to welcoming you to their farm, where you can experience their piece of heaven in the Greater Kruger Lowveld.

The farm has been in the Roux family for over 70 years, having been bought in 1948. Louwtjie’s parents, Louw and Rebekka Roux, took over the farm in 1989 to retire.

Louwtjie, who is also a qualified guide, pursued his career in tourism and nature conservation in the Kruger National Park. In 1999, he dedicated himself to the family farm as the fourth generation to settle here, with the ambition to create a homely tourist destination. The farm has since become a popular fishing, nature, and safari destination, and, from 1 November 2019, the newest addition to AfriCamps Boutique Glamping.

For the Roux family, the opportunity to provide a travel destination that boasts comfort, style, homegrown hospitality, and rugged African bushveld has always been a dream. They consider it a privilege to offer a gateway to the Kruger National Park and the beautiful wilderness of the Lowveld, providing travelers with an unforgettable experience.

Check-out: Before 10h00 on day of departure

Malaria risk

Although Hoedspruit is a low risk malaria area, we recommend you consult your doctor about the necessary precautions, especially if you are visiting Kruger National Park during your stay.

Swimming

Go for a dip at the camp pool or unwind with a drink while watching from the poolside.

CANOEING

Guests are welcome to use the dam for rowing – the perfect place to angle from. Please bring your own canoes or kayaks and oars.

FISHING

This AfriCamps location is perfect for avid fishermen as all 11 tents are located on the dam. This spot has been a favourite among local fishermen for years and you can catch carp, bass, bream, and barbel typically weighing up to 10 kg!

Please note the following important fishing rules – we love our fish!

Carp fishing: Only specimen anglers with the correct fishing gear are allowed to fish for carp. Fishing is strictly catch-and-release; no fish are allowed to be kept in keepnets. An unhooking mat is compulsory and available at the camp. Only weight slings – no lip grippers are allowed. Guests are only allowed to fish for carp with one hook and a swivel. The minimum line capacity is 15 lb/6.8 kg. Carp should be handled in the water only, using an unhooking mat and landing net. Do not hold fish by their gills. No breaking off. No carp sacks are allowed. No uncooked or dry bait is permitted.

Bass, bream and barbell fishing: All fish are catch-and-release. Please handle the fish respectfully. No throwing of fish, please release them in the water safely.

Please enquire from your host, Louwtjie for any specific fishing-related questions before arrival to make sure you have everything you need.

Fishing rates: Adults: R165 pp per day | Children: R50 pp per day (under 12 years)

SPA TREATMENTS AT YOUR TENT

Enjoy a relaxing massage or manicure/pedicure in the privacy of your own accommodation.

WOOD-FIRED HOT TUBS

All 11 tents have their own wood-fired hot tub. A wood-fired hot tub is the purest form of relaxation. After a day of exploring, relax while listening to the calming crackle of the fire. Or use it as a splash pool on the hotter days. Hoedspruit can reach temperatures in the 40s, so the private splash pool will be the hero of your glamping site in summer.

AFRICAMPS MAGOEBASKLOOF, LIMPOPO

AfriCamps Magoebaskloof is located between Tzaneen and Haenertsburg in Limpopo, where 12 fully equipped boutique glamping tents overlook the mesmerising Magoebaskloof landscape. The tents are surrounded by lush gardens, farm dams, and exquisite bird species, where birders, hikers, and MTB enthusiasts can explore to their hearts’ content! Choose between our classic tents that sleep up to five guests, and our brand-new premium tents that are designed specifically for couples seeking an extra touch of style.

‘Kloof’ translates to gorge, and this gorge is spectacular in many ways. Magoebaskloof is a series of lush green valleys popularly known as ‘The Land of the Silver Mist’ due to the soft mist blanket often covering the valleys. It is this soft mist and good rainfall that create a thick forest blooming with amazing plant species. Streams, waterfalls, and dams dot the area. During your stay, you will catch glimpses of the lush Afromontane forest, eucalyptus, pine and tea plantations, and avocado, berry, and kiwi farms.

The camp lies just outside Haenertsburg at the popular Cheerio Gardens Wedding Venue. The property is best known for its exquisite gardens – the true passion of former owner and botanist, Sheila ‘Box’ Thompson, who began cultivating the gardens from scratch in 1946. The gardens have since blossomed into what they are today – one of South Africa’s most beautiful garden wedding venues.

Cherry blossoms, crab apple trees, azaleas, African ferns, and pin oaks invite you in, and the vibrant colors of hydrangeas, camellias, irises, and foxgloves flourishing in the spring are sure to win you over. The abundant birdlife comes as no surprise, with guests able to spot Green Twinspots, Barratt’s Warblers, White-starred Robins, Lemon Doves, the elusive Narina Trogon, and Half-collared Kingfishers during their stay. Samango monkeys jumping from tree to tree and the cheerful whistling of farm labourers add to the calm garden atmosphere. Guests can expect a good dose of rest for the soul!

The picturesque Haenertsburg, with its rolling grasslands, bright-coloured flowers, and European-influenced architecture, reminds guests of a Swiss village. The village and its immaculate gardens attract visitors from far and wide, offering a peaceful escape from the city. You’re sure to leave feeling relaxed and recharged.

Your Hosts

Meet Sarah, JJ and their son Ryder – your gracious hosts at AfriCamps Magoebaskloof!

The gorgeous Cheerio Gardens property has been family-owned for generations, with an inspiring history. In 1946, former owner and botanist Sheila ‘Box’ Thompson began cultivating the magnificent gardens that have become renowned for their stunning garden weddings. Seventy-five years later, the gardens are still the talk of the town. Today, owner Sarah Hillary is the heart and soul of Cheerio Gardens, continuing the legacy of her great aunt:

“Cheerio Gardens is a fascinating fairy tale of an eccentric woman who simply couldn’t live without flowers, and today we get to walk in her garden and enjoy her vision as her legacy lives on. As a child I used to spend weekends on the farm roaming around with my cousins, making forts and fairy houses. We loved taking swims in the dam and enjoyed stomping around in the reeds. It is a place where parents can bring their kids and let them be free.”

Sarah’s brothers and her husband, JJ, farm avocados – a major industry in the area. Sarah and JJ love sharing their property with guests and you can expect a very warm welcome as soon as you enter the farm. Having lived in Magoebaskloof for years, the family knows the area well and will guide you in the right direction whether you’re an avid hiker or mountain biker or simply want to explore some of the locals’ favourite spots.

Together, the family enjoys taking leisurely strolls to the dams, spotting rare birds on the farm, and popping in at Cheerio Café for their coveted pecan nut pie!

AFRICAMPS WATERBERG, LIMPOPO

Located in the heart of the Waterberg plateau in Limpopo, a tranquil bushveld safari awaits at AfriCamps Waterberg. Whether you like to relax and recharge, or a jam-packed adventure is more your speed, here you’re always surrounded by wildlife and tranquil bush scenery. The camp is only a 2.5-hour drive from Pretoria, 30 km northeast of Vaalwater, and invites you to experience the unspoiled wilderness of the Waterberg Biosphere. Surrounded by 2,500-hectare game reserve encompassing wetlands, open fields, bushy areas and a rocky ridge, the family-friendly AfriCamps Waterberg offers various exciting game viewing opportunities in a malaria-free environment.

Highlights on the reserve include horseback game viewing safaris, guided game drives, hiking, astronomy shows (hosted by camp owner, Dr. Phillip Calcott), and birdwatching. Guests can encounter rhino, giraffe, zebra, eland, wildebeest, roan, tsessebe, sable, buffalo, kudu, impala, blesbok, waterbuck and ostrich on the property. There is abundant birdlife, particularly close to the dams and wetlands.

The property provides unique facilities that round off your bushveld experience perfectly. Cool off in the farm’s 15 m semi-heated swimming pool, challenge the family to a game of volleyball, and visit our lookout decks, Tree Tops, or the Aardvark deck for endless bushveld views. For the kids, the adventure playground is a firm favourite. With Waterberg’s hot summers and moderate winters, the camp is a year-round holiday or weekend destination.

Staying in one of AfriCamps’ 10 fully equipped boutique glamping tents allows guests to get closer to nature while enjoying life’s little comforts like a fully furnished open-plan kitchen, living and dining space, indoor fireplace, two separate bedrooms with luxurious extra-length queen-size beds, electric blankets, a private en suite bathroom with a spacious rain shower, outdoor wood-fired hot tubs on the decks, Wi-Fi, and 24/7 access to solar power.

So where exactly is the Waterberg? The Waterberg plateau, a very special part of South Africa, is a mountainous massif of approximately 654,033 hectares in north Limpopo Province, forming a sort of natural “castle” or inverted saucer with ramparts of rock formations around the edges. At the foothills of this castle are many towns: Modimolle, Mookgophong, Mokopane, Lephalale, Thabazimbi and Bela-Bela. The portals to the massif that forms the castle are all beautiful passes: Sandrivierspoort, Bakker’s Pass, Bokpoort, the Kloof Pass, the Beauty Road and other lesser-known access routes. There is archaeological evidence that the San and, much later, the Pedi, retreated to this haven in times of danger.

AfriCamps’ tents are situated along a ridge in the very heart of this plateau where the scenery is one of open vistas stretching to distant horizons bounded by the blue outlines of mountains and hills that form the ramparts of the Waterberg “castle”. The sparsely populated plains and bushland of this upland plateau are filled with wildlife and the beauty of unspoiled nature. The air is unpolluted and the water pure. The low level of light pollution contributes to this being one of the most perfect sites for astronomy in the country.

En route to AfriCamps Waterberg, you will pass Vaalwater, the only town on the plateau. Traditional South African hospitality can be encountered at several restaurants and the well-appointed Zeederberg Centre with well-stocked Spar, upmarket Black Mamba Curio Shop, Syringa Café and Carla’s renowned bakery cater for local and international guests. The number of game vehicles in Vaalwater reflects the nature of the Waterberg as a hidden paradise of private game reserves.

Hosts

AfriCamps Waterberg is situated on a 2,500-hectare private game reserve within the beautiful 15,000-square-kilometre Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, an area with low human density and large expanses of unspoiled wilderness recognised by UNESCO.

Your hosts are Philip and Juliet Calcott. Juliet is the fifth generation of her family to live and work on the property, which was purchased by the Baber family over 100 years ago. Philip’s background is as a physicist, with a particular passion for astronomy and the glories of the night sky. Since arriving in the bush 20 years ago, he has taken guests on more than 1,000 “Night Sky Safaris” – astronomy shows widely considered to be world-class. He would be delighted to take you on a personalised tour of the stunning wonders of the night sky.

Juliet has taught in local schools and has a deep love of the Waterberg, its nature, its history, and its people. Her father, Charles Baber, and her great-grandfather, Ted Davidson, were both men of energy, humor, and community spirit. Juliet has inherited a century-long treasure trove of stories of love, war, and community endeavour in the Waterberg, which informs her “Step into the Past” Tour.

With the diverse activities on offer, we are sure you’ll have a memorable experience at AfriCamps Waterberg, and we hope to welcome you soon!

AFRICAMPS AT MILORHO, MAGALIESBERG

AfriCamps at Milorho is situated amidst the ancient beauty of the Magaliesberg Mountains – the world’s fourth-oldest mountain range. This pristine natural landscape boasts 12 boutique glamping tents, only two hours from Johannesburg. Milorho offers a dreamy escape into tranquillity, away from the hustle and bustle of busy city life. Choose between our classic tents that sleep up to five guests, and our brand-new premium tents that are designed specifically for couples seeking a memorable romantic break.

With over 400 hectares of vast beautiful kloofs and awe-inspiring rock pools, you can experience nature’s freedom through comfortable walks or exciting hiking trails. Traverse through a beautiful gorge, cool off in the rock pools, and spot waterfalls, ancient Iron Age structures, and abundant flora and fauna. The rock formations are remarkable, making hiking the only way to truly experience the area’s geology, history, and natural beauty. A number of wild animals including blue wildebeest, duiker, the brown hyena, jackal, klipspringer, and reedbuck can be spotted on the farm. Additionally, Milorho boasts an arboretum and a stunning sculpture garden that showcases a remarkable collection of sculptures made from stone and iron. It also features a showroom at reception where Live Edge Wood Designs’ beautiful wooden pieces, crafted from sustainably sourced trees, are displayed and sold. There is also an inviting sparkling swimming pool at the camp that beckons for a refreshing dip on the warmer days. For the thrill seekers, AfriCamps at Milorho is only one hour from Pilansberg National Park and adjacent to Magaliesberg Canopy Tour.

Where exactly is Magaliesberg? Magaliesberg is one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world, formed by a volcanic eruption over two billion years ago. This ancient giant stretches over 120 kilometers from Pretoria in Gauteng to Rustenburg in North West province. It is also perfectly positioned between Johannesburg and the Botswana border, making Magaliesberg the ideal spot to take a break and spend a few nights on your journey. The Magaliesberg acts as a natural border, separating the warm bushveld with its low grasslands and savannas to the north, and from the cooler highveld grasslands to the south. Its geology is characterised by quartzite formations formed from ancient sand deposits, with some of the oldest exposed volcanic rocks in the country. Over 120 different tree species thrive here, alongside a treasure trove of indigenous medicinal plants. Look a little closer and you might spot a troop of baboons or a shy leopard. The skies are a symphony of birdsong, with over 200 avian species calling the Magaliesberg home. The Cradle of Humankind, which is the birthplace of humanity, also lies within Magaliesberg. This area is rich in fossils and tools dating back 2.5 to 2.8 million years, and boasts famous discoveries such as Mrs. Ples and Little Foot. It is also perfectly positioned between Johannesburg and the Botswana border, making Magaliesberg the ideal spot to take a break and spend a few nights on your journey. Steeped in history and brimming with adventure, Magaliesberg continues to attract explorers seeking an escape from the city and a chance to reconnect with nature’s embrace.
