AFRICAMPS AT DOOLHOF, WELLINGTON

AfriCamps at Doolhof is located within the award-winning Doolhof Wine Estate, a short drive from the picturesque town of Wellington and only 50 minutes from Cape Town.

Nestled beneath the historic Bainskloof Pass at the foot of the Groenberg Mountain Range, our 16 AfriCamps boutique glamping tents are surrounded by breathtaking mountains and sweeping vineyards. Six of the tents open onto a peaceful meadow, where the soothing sounds of the Kromme River fill the air, and 10 hillside tents boast breathtaking mountain views. And there’s no better way to experience it than from your private outdoor wood-fired hot tub surrounded by the beauty of the Cape Winelands.

Activities on the estate include a 5 km vineyard hike, the river walk that leads you all along the Kromme River, mountain biking trails that start on the property, a kids mountain bike trail, the tasting room where you can sample some of the estate’s award-winning wines along with a platter or lunch and, of course, the outdoor wood-fired hot tub next to your tent. You can enjoy a selection of spa treatments from the comfort and privacy of your own tent, but please note, prior booking is required. Off the property, explore the surrounding area’s popular mountain biking trails, hiking trails in the Limietberg Nature Reserve, horse riding, touring between various Wellington wine farms and distilleries, and world-class golf courses.

Your stay at AfriCamps at Doolhof is not complete without a visit to the tasting room where you will uncover the secrets behind Doolhof’s award-winning wines. Two white varietals (Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay) and a substantial number of reds are grown on the estate. They include Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Merlot, Pinotage and Shiraz. The white varietals are planted on the eastern slopes of the Groenberg, allowing the grapes cooler days and less direct sunlight. Enjoy a complimentary wine tasting and take a few bottles home as a reminder of your winelands experience.

Activities on the Farm

HIKING & WALKING TRAILS

River Walk

Follow the treelined path for about 3.5 km and enjoy the scenic views along the river. Settle down for a delicious picnic at one of the designated picnic sites along the trail.

Vineyard & Kids’ MTB Route

Enjoy a 4 km walk through vineyards against the backdrop of Doolhof Wine Estate, which boasts mysterious hills and valleys that are home to many small mammals, such as bucks, porcupines, baboons, and even a shy leopard. This trail is perfect for kids to zoom along the jeep tracks.

Doolhof Mountain Trail

For spectacular views of the estate and the surrounding winelands, head out on a 13 km hike to the summit and back. The predominantly single track trail has an elevation of 650 metres and takes between 4 and 7 hours. View trail map.

Blue Route/Warthog Loop (11 km)

The route begins just before the workers’ houses on the road leading to Oaklands (look for the ‘Tunnel Vision’ sign). Follow the blue signs, which will eventually lead you back to Doolhof Boutique Hotel. This route is part of the Wild Boar MTB trail and can be explored on foot or by bike. If you are walking, please be aware that you might encounter mountain bikers you need to give way. A permit is required.

Welvanpas Hiking Route (9 km)

Take the gravel road back towards Wellington. After approximately 1.5 km, you will arrive at Welvanpas Farm. Turn right into the parking area and follow the signs marked with a foot impression. From there, the round trip is about 6 km, with an additional 1.5 km back to Doolhof Boutique Hotel. Please note that this trail is not suitable for mountain biking.

MOUNTAIN BIKING TRAILS

Wellington is well known for its spectacular mountain biking trails. Bring along your mountain bike and start the trails right from Doolhof.

Guests can cycle anywhere on the farm or buy a day permit for the popular Wild Boar trails. Your permit can be paid via SnapScan at R100 per person. Please enquire with your host for further information.

The kids will enjoy the quick 3.5 km dash through the vineyards, complete with two river crossings. This is the same route as the Vineyard Walk, so parents can walk along.

Using fresh, high-quality ingredients and blending classic techniques with innovative methods, they create flavours that are both vibrant and unique.

THE LABYRINTH

As a tribute to the estate’s history and labyrinthine characteristics, a small labyrinth was constructed close to the entrance of the farm. This is a fun spot for the kids to play and make their way through the labyrinth. Did you know the name ‘Doolhof’ translates to ‘labyrinth’?

Exploring the Area

Wine Farms & Distilleries

AfriCamps at Doolhof is nestled at the end of the Bovlei Valley and offers an authentic winelands experience. Taste delicious wines on award-winning wine estates such as Doolhof Wine Estate, Dunstone, Val du Charron, Welvanpas Family Vineyards, or Bosman Family Vineyards, many of which offer country-style lunches and snacks. Some of the estates are within walking distance of Doolhof, but you can also enjoy a bike ride between the wine farms. Try world-class organic brandy, grappa, port, and Cabernet Sauvignon from Upland Organic Wine and Brandy Estate, or take a distillery tour at James Sedgwick Distillery, where grain and malt whiskies are distilled.

Wellington Wine Walk

Enjoy the Wellington Wine Walk with well-informed guides who will introduce you to the local personalities and products of the area by guiding you along private property and quaint routes. They promise to unlock many of the well-kept secrets of Wellington and trust that your walk will be a rewarding experience.

Mountain Biking Trails

Wellington has amazing mountain biking trails for beginners, intermediate, and advanced riders. A detailed map of trails is available at the tasting room.

Our suggested mountain biking routes are:

Potbelly Kids Ride

This route starts and finishes at Val du Charron, where beginners can experience the 3.3 km long trail through vineyards or flat roads.

Cross Country

This route starts and ends at Doolhof Wine Estate. The route is 4.3 km long and for intermediate to advanced mountain bikers.

Flat Hog

This 42 km trail is for beginners to intermediate riders. The trail will take 1.5 to 3 hours and will lead you through beautiful open gravel roads and small sections of jeep track.

Scout Loop

The Scout Loop is a beautiful trail for intermediate to advanced riders with an ascent of 928 metres. The trail is 20.5 km long and takes 1 to 3 hours.

Wild Boar

This 42.3 km trail has an ascent of 1,495 metres. It is loved by intermediate to advanced riders.

Warthog

The Warthog trail is 36.3 km long and will take 2.5 to 5 hours. It will take you to a high peak with an ascent of 1,229 metres.

Porcupine Loop

A short ride for adventurous intermediate riders that will take 1.5 to 3 hours.

Hedgehog Loop

The Hedgehog Loop is a 16.4 km trail with a 679 metre ascent and is suitable for intermediate riders.

Bainskloof Pass

In the mid-19th century, a good connection route from the region around Wellington to the inland of South Africa was needed. In 1846, Andrew Geddes Bain explored the mountain, and in 1849, began with the construction of a road through the gorge. Today, the 26 km Bainskloof Pass is recognised as a national monument and makes for a beautiful drive with stunning views over the Boland.

Hiking

Limietberg Nature Reserve offers various hiking trails through fynbos-rich areas dotted with clear rock pools, giving hikers the opportunity to cool down. The reserve is a 10-minute drive from Doolhof. Here are a few of our suggestions:

Rock Hopper (7.5 km/5 hours)

Walk up or downstream. Find your own way up or down the boulder-strewn riverbed of the Witte River. Start from the Bainskloof Lodge parking area, climb down to the river, and follow it downstream to Tweede Tol. The trail alternates between rock hopping, walking, and swimming through to the last pool at Tweede Tol.

Murasie (7 km/3 hours)

There and back. An easy stroll up to the ruins of Hugo’s Rest, a house seemingly surrounded by ill fortune. The trail starts at the Bainskloof Lodge parking area. About 150 metres from the parking area, you climb over a fence using a wooden stile. Follow a jeep track past a memorial. Walk a little further and take your next turn to the right to find the haunted ruin. This route is ideal for large groups, with some good swimming pools along the way.

Happy Valley (10 km/6 hours)

There and back. This route follows a section of the Limietberg Trail and ends at Junction Pool. The trail is limited to 12 people per day. Starting at the Bainskloof Lodge parking area, follow the gravel road for about 150 metres, and then climb over a fence using the wooden stile. Follow the jeep track parallel to the Witte River, which has some spine-tingling pools. Junction Pool is one of the most popular pools in the Boland mountains. Look out for a furrow, Die Witrivier se Grip, that was built by farmers in 1856 to divert water from the Witte River to the Berg River Valley.

Bobbejaansrivier (9 km/5 hours)

There and back. The trail starts at the Bainskloof Lodge parking area. It winds along the Bobbejaans River, a tributary of the Witte River. You cross the Witte River for an easy walk along a contour above the river. After about 3.5 km, there is a turn-off to inviting pools in the river. The final 750 metres ascend steeply to the three-tiered waterfall. This trail is very popular in summer when disas and giant proteas are in bloom. The Witte River is difficult to cross in winter.

Spice Route, Paarl

Spice Route is your one-stop destination for all things delicious and crafty in the Cape Winelands. Taste it all! The Cape Brewing Company’s brewery and tasting room is located at Spice Route, where you can enjoy tasters of all their beers. Taste Spice Route Wines paired with platters of cheese and charcuterie at the tasting room. De Villiers Chocolate tasting is more than a tasting – it’s a chocolate experience, and should definitely be on your Spice Route bucket list. Wilderer’s gin tasting is another favourite. Take home some fynbos gin – it’s their specialty. After all the tasting, settle down for lunch with a remarkable winelands view at La Grapparia (amazing pizzas and flamkuchen) or Biltong and Barley – more CBC beer on tap, paired with biltong or their amazing burgers! Stop over at Fairview next door for their delicious cheese selection and wines.

Wellington Museum

The Wellington Museum features not only the cultures, artefacts, traditional tools, musical instruments, and jewellery of various African ethnic groups, but also prides itself in having ties with countries as far afield as America, England, Scotland, France, and the Netherlands. It exhibits Stone Age artefacts, a major collection of Egyptian artefacts, and tells the stories of various pioneers who made their mark on the history of South Africa. Visit the museum and discover the age-old mysteries of Africa.

Wellington Heritage Trail (Walking Tour)

The Wellington Heritage Trail starts at the Wellington Tourism Info Office, located next to the Dutch Reformed Church and the statue of Dr. Andrew Murray, which dates back to the 1840s, follow this walking tour through the historical centre of Wellington.

Your Hosts

Peter and Jami Kastner are the owner-managers who live on the farm with their two young sons, Jack and Alex (winemakers-in-training). Before 2005, Peter owned a restaurant, and Jami ran a flower export company. In 2005, they sold their businesses and, together with a few friends, invested in what was then a portion of Weltevrede Farm, with four hectares of Pinotage for small-scale production and a single self-catering cottage for rental. Today, the estate is known as Stanford Hills, featuring six wine labels exported to 11 countries, a 100-seater restaurant, and accommodation for 57 guests. The farm is also a popular wedding venue and hosts various events, including a winter craft beer festival and the Stanford Stumble in November.

Although Peter has no formal wine training, he has learned on the job, navigating what he describes as a steep learning curve. He does most of the work by hand in the small cellar, which occupies one half of an aircraft hangar on the farm, and he believes in minimal intervention to allow the grapes to express their unique characteristics. Peter is confident in the quality of the grapes, which ripen slowly due to the cool sea breezes in the area and are carefully managed for optimal yield. As he puts it, “It’s possible to make a bad wine from good grapes, but there’s no way you can make good wine if your grapes aren’t up to scratch.”

Jami manages Casa Cello, the estate’s restaurant, where their children often help out as well. She is also a published author of Sam and Me and the Hard Pear Tree, published by Jacana, and has recently opened The Butterfly Centre in Stanford. This non-profit organisation offers a variety of beneficial activities for children in the area with special needs.

AFRICAMPS AT PAT BUSCH, ROBERTSON

AfriCamps at Pat Busch is situated in the Pat Busch Mountain Reserve, just outside Robertson. The reserve spans 2,000 hectares of spectacular mountain fynbos, with streams, mountain dams, birdlife, and various animals such as buck, fallow deer, Nguni cows, and even a very shy leopard. The reserve is also home to a rare Protea flower, which was thought to be extinct for almost 50 years but is now protected by Cape Nature. Our glamping tents are tucked away in the Cape fynbos, overlooking a lush green valley with the Langeberg Mountains as a stunning backdrop. In July 2019, we added five new tents, bringing the total to 10 on the property. We invite you to escape the hustle and bustle and explore this hidden valley with your friends and family.

The possibilities on the property are endless and include several walking trails, excellent birdwatching, bass fishing, and swimming and paddling in the farm dam. The sparkling nine-metre swimming pool, fringed by a rolling green lawn, is also a welcome retreat during the summer blaze.

The reserve is part of the Klaasvoogds West foothills in the Langeberg Mountains, between the towns of Robertson and Montagu. With over 160 years of history, Robertson has grown into one of the most charming Cape Winelands towns, with Victorian buildings, jacaranda-lined streets, and vineyards bordered by beautiful roses. The Robertson Valley is part of Route 62 – the longest wine route in the world – famous for its many wine festivals. There are also numerous attractions, activities, and culinary delights to enjoy. Visit Rialheim, a ceramic factory where you can view and purchase unique, handcrafted homeware. Elevate your wine-tasting experience by taking the Viljoensdrift River Cruise, complete with a gourmet picnic on the tranquil waters of the Breede River. Or, meander up the Langeberg Mountain on the Montagu Tractor Trip, and enjoy traditional potjiekos at an altitude of 1,500 metres above sea level. Finish your day with a soothing massage at the Rosendal Wellness Centre, while admiring the beauty of the surrounding vineyards.

Your Hosts

AfriCamps at Pat Busch Mountain Reserve is owned by Stephan and Lindi Busch. In the early 80s, the reserve was a working farm producing peaches, apricots, and grapes. Stephan’s father, who moved from Germany to South Africa 50 years ago, spent much of his free time hiking, fishing, and swimming on the farm. He fell in love with the land, and in 1985, when the opportunity arose to buy it, he didn’t hesitate. From that point forward, the farm became known as the Pat Busch Mountain Reserve. At the time, many visitors would stay in hiking cabins on the property, and reservations were made by simply leaving a letter in the mailbox. Renting out these cabins marked their first step into tourism and the start of a whole new venture.

Stephan’s connection to the reserve runs deep. He spent his childhood exploring every hidden corner of the property. A former boutique winemaker, Stephan not only discovered his passion for crafting fine wines here but also met his wife, Lindi. Now happily married with two children, Logan and Aurelia, they have built a life along the picturesque Garden Route.

Despite the distance, Stephan and Lindi, together with their dedicated team, manage 495 hectares of the mountain reserve, which includes cottages and a large farmhouse. Due to the increasing demand for the property, they expanded its use as a wedding and event venue. Over the years, Pat Busch has established itself as one of the premier event venues in the area, hosting many special occasions.

From the moment we met Stephan and Lindi, we were in a “too good to be true” mood. Not only were we awestruck by the beauty of the surroundings, but we also saw an incredible opportunity to accommodate guests in boutique glamping tents that offer a direct connection to the unspoiled nature of the reserve.

Upon your arrival, Johan, your camp host, will greet you with a warm welcome, while Rose can be found in the shop, ready to assist. Both are eager to meet you and will ensure your stay is unforgettable.

AFRICAMPS AT DE PAKHUYS, CEDERBERG

Known for its dramatic wind-carved sandstone formations, vibrant springtime flowers, and ancient rock art of great archaeological significance, the rugged Cederberg landscape is a place of unique and diverse natural beauty.

AfriCamps at de Pakhuys is located in the heart of the Rocklands in the northernmost part of the Cederberg Wilderness Area, 26 km from Clanwilliam, en route to the historic Wupperthal village. Nestled between striking rock faces and picturesque vineyards in the Agter-Pakhuis Valley, 10 fully equipped boutique glamping tents welcome nature lovers, adventure seekers, avid boulderers, and those simply looking to recharge in nature to a peaceful corner of the vast and beautiful Cederberg, overlooking the Pakhuis Mountains.

Rocklands is an alluring and mysterious area covered in dramatic boulders and crags. These ancient rock formations offer some of the best bouldering and climbing sites in the world, attracting bouldering communities from across the globe, and de Pakhuys Guest Farm is their favourite place to retreat while they take on the different bouldering spots around the area.

Multiple hiking trails meander between boulders across the property, with welcome sights like rock pools, San rock art, and even a waterfall along the way. If you’re lucky, you might even spot the elusive Verreaux’s eagle nesting high against the cliffs. A scenic drive to the top section of the farm (accessible only with a 4×4 vehicle) takes you to 60 hectares of rooibos tea lands, 260 hectares of unspoiled fynbos gorges blooming with wildflowers in season, and a rock cave – the perfect spot for a picnic. Take a more laid-back approach and spend the day at the camp swimming in the farm dam, fishing for bass in the neighboring farm dam, or sipping on some fine wines at the winery next door.

When visiting the camp, one is surrounded by a landscape brimming with history. The area is home to magnificent sandstone boulders, carved and sculpted by the elements over thousands of years. The Cederberg hosts some of the best-known San rock art in Southern Africa, which many believe to be the richest legacy of rock art on the planet. Thankfully, these sites form part of the Cederberg Wilderness Area, which has been protected by Cape Nature since 1973. Dubbed the ‘rooibos capital of the world,’ the Cederberg is the only place in the world where rooibos tea (an iconic South African drink that has been enjoyed for over 300 years) grows naturally.

Your Hosts

Meet the Botha and Kruger families – olive, rooibos, sheep, and “rock” farmers who have been running de Pakhuys since its humble beginnings in 2003.

De Pakhuys covers 1,000 hectares of land, including parts of the flat valley floor and massive chunks of an elevated rocky plateau. The rugged outcrops are dotted with about 600 world-renowned climbing sites. The land is situated within the greater Cederberg conservancy and apart from some commercial farming, the vegetation is left untouched to protect the biodiversity of the region.

De Pakhuys farm is situated in the Agter-Pakhuis Valley. The valley’s only link to the town of Clanwilliam is by one of the most scenic mountain passes in the Western Cape, the Pakhuis Pass. Literally translated, Pakhuis means warehouse. The origin of the name is not certain but probably refers to the majestic, stacked rock formation along the route. Recently tarred, the winding Thomas Bain build pass, climbs up to 914 metres above sea level offering breathtaking views of the rugged Cederberg and the innumerable hills towards the Hantam and Calvinia on the horizons.

Here in the mountains, the air is crisp, the sky a crystal blue; down on the earth below, a multitude of twisted and special orange-shaped rocks jutting out from amidst the greenery of shrubs and the occasional tree. It is a space of serene beauty and quiet contemplation, in which anyone of any age and ability can attempt their hand at an activity they never in a million years thought of trying before. Rocklands, Cederberg, is a place of something new and of something special. The Cederberg mountains kick deep into your heart – the Waboom and Gharrabushes, the shy Klipbokke, and the baboons, not to mention the ever-elusive Cape Leopard.

The Botha and Kruger families look forward to welcoming you to AfriCamps at de Pakhuys!

Activities on the Farm

HIKING TRAILS

There are two established hiking trails meandering through sandstone boulders and along the river on the farm.

Waterfall Trail

A moderate 6 km trail along the banks of the Brandewyn River down into a nearby kloof where the river plummets 500 metres into the Karoo basin, resulting in lovely waterfalls, rapids, and astounding rock formations. For the fortunate bird watcher, you might spot the Verreaux’s eagle nesting high against the cliffs.

Sylvains Trail

This trail follows a mountain path leading up to the Die Plaat area of the farm. The 30-minute hike is steep, requiring moderate fitness. It’s a must for sunset lovers, offering stunning views of the valley and surrounding mountains.

Heuningvlei  Trail

This trail traces the old 4×4 track from the top of Pakhuis Pass to the historic village of Heuningvlei. Experience the Cederberg’s breathtaking beauty on what is considered one of the Western Cape’s most scenic walks!

‘Die Plaat’ Trail

Another moderate hike along the 4×4 track to Die Plaat area of the farm. The hike takes approximately 2 hours but can be adjusted for those who feel like a shorter walk and offers elevated views of the surrounding mountains and valley, which are particularly exquisite to witness during the spring flower season.

Bouldering

De Pakhuys offers a range of bouldering sites including Girl on our Mind 6C, Minky 7B, Black Velvet 8A, Gliding Through The Waves Like Dophins 8A+, Ray of Light 8B, and Witness the sickness 8A.

View Rocklands topos here.

Crash pads are available at the camp and can be booked in advance.

Exploring the Area

BOULDERING

With 3,771 routes in 86 crags, Rocklands is a bouldering paradise. This dramatic sandstone landscape has become increasingly popular as a world-class climbing destination amongst the international climbing community, offering some of the top bouldering sites in the world. The main bouldering area for Rocklands can be accessed from a parking lot near the top of Pakhuis Pass, which offers widespread views over the distinctly rugged and craggy sandstone landscape.

Crash pads are available at the camp and can be booked in advance.

Black Diamond DropZone: R130 per day
Black Diamond Mondo: R150 per day
Single pad (second season): R90 per day

Please note: No climbing is allowed in Rocklands without a valid climbing permit. Permits can be obtained online or purchased at reception.

Hiking trails

The lesser-known northern Cederberg mountains and surrounding Rocklands are home to some of the most scenic hiking trails in the Cederberg. Some of these quieter trails are unique in that a fellow walker might not be seen for a couple of hours or throughout the entire trail.

The Pakhuisberg Day Hike (10.2 km from camp)

A circular 13 km hike both starting and finishing at the Kliphuis campsite entrance. This moderately difficult hike takes you into Pakhuisberg, offering elevated views of the surrounding rocky landscapes and peaks with close-ups of indigenous wildlife and the diverse fynbos vegetation. Permits must be purchased from the Kliphuis campsite office before the hike.

The Heuningvlei Jeep Track (7.2 km from camp)

The Heuningvlei Jeep Track hike is said to be one of the most scenic hikes in the Western Cape. This moderately difficult hike (depending on how far you go) offers breathtaking views of the surrounding raw Rocklands landscape and expansive Agter Pakhuis Valley. The entrance to the hike is from the gravel parking at the top of the Pakhuis Pass. You can either walk all the way to Heuningvlei, (which is about 11 km away) or turn back at any point you like.

The Sevilla Trail (7.6 km from camp)

A relatively easy 5 km walk from Traveller’s Rest Farm. This fascinating San rock art trail takes you passed nine different rock art sites while following the Brandewyn river. The Sevilla Trail is a comfortable walk that offers insight into ancient San cultures. Local farm game including Springbok, Eland, and Hartebeest may be seen along the trail as well as the common dassie (or rock rabbit) and local baboon troops. In addition to the intricate indigenous fynbos that surrounds the Sevilla Trail, during springtime, the wildflowers offer an even further depth of beauty to this historically enriching experience. Permits for the Sevilla Trail can be obtained from the Traveller’s Rest Farmstall, where a free basic description of the nine rock art sites is available.

Wine and olive oil tasting at Alpha Excelsior

Produced on the neighbouring farm, Alpha Excelsior, Rugged Rocks wine is produced by traditional methods from the neat Shiraz, Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards you see around the farm. The entire process is done by hand – going back to the way that wine has been made for centuries and is aged in oak barrels, ensuring optimal conditions for the wine to mature. The farm offers a winery tour on which guests can taste some of their delicious wines and learn more about the winemaking process.

Please note that operating hours and days may differ. Call +27 (0)63 315 6560 to check availability and book.

Alpha Excelsior planted its first olive trees in 2006 and now has 6.5 hectares of Mission and Frantoio Olives. The fruit is small with a bold, intense flavour. Their olives are all hand-picked, brined, and bottled on the farm. Any olives that are not bottled are cold-pressed with their own olive press to produce boutique extra virgin olive oil. Their olive oil is available for tasting and can be purchased at the winery.

San rock aRt

The Cederberg mountains are home to some of the best-known San rock art sites in Southern Africa, which is thought to have the richest legacy of rock art on the planet. There are over 2,500 known rock art sites in the broader Cederberg region, dating between 250 to as old as 8,000 years. These ancient rock paintings are therefore extremely important sites of Southern African ancestry, offering insights into a time and culture which has largely disappeared.

The best way to explore these historic sites is along the Sevilla trail, a relatively easy 5 km walk from Traveller’s Rest Farm. This fascinating San rock art trail passes nine different rock art sites while following the Brandewyn river.

Rooibos tea tastings

Rooibos tea is an iconic South African warm drink that has been enjoyed by locals for more than 300 years. With the Cederberg being the only place on the planet where rooibos grows naturally, it is only fitting to learn more about this beloved drink on a tea tasting.

House of Rooibos

House of Rooibos, a relatively new initiative of Rooibos Ltd., the largest rooibos tea producer and distributor in the world, offers an extensive variety of rooibos teas including original, organic, and flavoured teas. A variety of 13 different rooibos and honey-bush teas are available in the tearoom and tea garden, along with rooibos cappuccinos, milkshakes, iced teas and ice creams.

Rooibos Tea House

Rooibos Tea House stocks over 100 rooibos blends and flavours which range from natural, herbal, fruity, and sweet, to green, spicy and floral. These are all available for both tasting and purchase. They also offer a unique tea tasting which allows you to choose any seven rooibos teas and enjoy them while reading about the history of rooibos, the production process, and some further facts about this famous South African tea.

Visit the historic Wupperthal village

A visit to the historic Wupperthal village offers a rare window into a village of the early 1800s. The village seems to have gotten lost in time, consisting of quaint thatched cottages portraying the Cape Dutch style in all its glory. Although this beautiful missionary village is only a straight 25 km southeast of Clanwilliam, the road takes you through 75 km of breathtaking scenery, down into the Tra-Tra Valley at the northern foothills of the Cederberg Wilderness Area. The village was established in 1828 by two Rhenish missionaries, Johann Gottlieb Leipoldt and J von Wurm.

Muisbosskerm open-air restaurant

For a seafood experience of a lifetime, unique to the West Coast, pay a visit to Muisbosskerm! The restaurant is an hour’s drive from the camp but should not be excluded from your bucket list. Offering the West Coast’s most sought-after seafood dishes like crayfish, a wide variety of fish, baked, smoked, and grilled, the traditional waterblommetjie stew, to the ever-fresh homemade bread straight from the clay-oven, with homemade butter, this is a dining experience that cannot be missed.

Donkey cart adventures

Explore the rugged, wild beauty of the Cederberg on a donkey cart adventure trail. Donkey carts are the traditional way to travel in the Cederberg – locals used to use donkeys to carry their produce to Clanwilliam. The route begins at the top of Pakhuis Pass, where you can leave your car. The two-and-a-half-hour trail ends in the charming Heuningvlei village, one of the 14 Moravian Mission Church outposts. The small local community is known for its production of traditional dried fruit and organic rooibos tea.

AFRICAMPS AT KAM’BATI, SWELLENDAM

AfriCamps at Kam’Bati is situated on the popular Kam’Bati River Resort about 20 km west of Swellendam in the Western Cape. The Sonderend and Breede Rivers meet on this Overberg farm, allowing for plenty of river activities for the whole family. Kam’Bati River Resort is home to 13 AfriCamps boutique glamping tents, five of which are located in a beautiful section of the resort overlooking a wetland abuzz with birdlife. Four tents look out onto a small farm dam, while the remaining four tents are slightly elevated overlooking the resort and the beautiful farm landscape surrounding the resort. The outdoor wood-fired hot tub next to each tent is the perfect place to listen to the birdsongs or relax under the stars at night. The resort is also a popular destination amongst campers with a number of camping sites along the river as well as other types of accommodation.

Kam’Bati River Resort adds plenty of family-friendly activities to your glamping experience. Try your luck at fishing from the banks of the Breede River, or challenge the whole family to a round of mini-golf. The kids will love swinging into the river from a rope, the three swimming pools with slides, and the playground. Please note, all amenities and facilities are open to all guests staying at Kam’Bati River Resort.

Take it a bit slower and cycle along the endless farm roads which are especially beautiful during canola season when the farm is covered in bright yellow fields. Explore the river walkway in front of the tents with the kids. The resort has a bar and lounge which is open over weekends, so you won’t miss the big sports matches!

The town of Swellendam brings its own adventures. Swellendam is the largest youngberry growing area in the world and is bursting with heritage, culture, and architecture. Visit the famous Drostdy Museum, enjoy the iconic view of the Dutch Reformed Church, or take the kids to the fairy sanctuary. On the fringe of town, you will find Bontebok National Park and Marloth Nature Reserve; nature parks popular for hiking, and bird watching. Swellendam has a vibrant food culture, with plenty of restaurants offering everything from fine dining to traditional farm-style meals to coffee shops serving delectable cakes.

Your Hosts

AfriCamps at Kam’Bati and Kam’Bati River Resort is situated on the Jubileeskraal farm, just outside Swellendam, which has been owned by the Badenhorst family since 1958. Bati Badenhorst was the first farmer in the family, and today, his grandsons Jaco and Francois Badenhorst manage all the farming and leisure activities. The Swellendam area has always been regarded as the breadbasket of the Cape, primarily dedicated to grain farming. At Jubileeskraal, the family cultivates corn, wheat, barley, canola, and raises sheep.

Jaco and Francois have always felt privileged to spend time in nature, enjoying the vast space and tranquillity of the farm. They decided it would be wonderful to share this experience with others, which led to the creation of Kam’Bati River Resort, named in honour of their late grandfather, Bati Badenhorst. To cater to nature enthusiasts who prefer a touch of comfort, Kam’Bati partnered with AfriCamps.

Since the opening of AfriCamps at Kam’Bati, Jaco has continued to enhance the camp’s offerings. In 2019, the tents were upgraded with new flooring, additional decking, and each tent received an outdoor wood-fired hot tub! Today, Swellendam and Kam’Bati offer much more than a mere stopover on the way to the Garden Route. Thanks to the innovation of Kam’Bati’s exceptional team, it has become a vibrant family holiday destination in its own right and one of AfriCamps’ most popular glamping spots!

AFRICAMPS AT KAROO 1, HEX VALLEY

The Hex River Valley, known as the gateway between the Cape and the Great Karoo, is an enchanting valley worth a spot on your Western Cape bucket list. Here, folklore meets thriving agriculture and remarkable rocky landscapes, giving visitors their first real peek into the Karoo.

AfriCamps at Karoo 1, Hex Valley, boasts 13 boutique glamping tents overlooking the picturesque farm and its surrounding rock faces. The tents dot the landscape and lead the way to a stunning natural rock pool – an oasis against the arid Karoo backdrop.

AfriCamps at Karoo 1 welcomes families, couples, wedding guests, and close groups of friends to retreat away from the busy city, just a short 2-hour drive from Cape Town. Guests are greeted by Benji, the lovable sheepdog – your first glimpse into the warm Karoo hospitality you’ll experience during your stay.

As much as we love this location for its tranquility and soul-soothing atmosphere, guests can also opt for a more adventurous experience. Hiking trails, mountain biking trails, swimming in the rock pool, and even rock climbing all await on the property. Guests can also choose a day safari at the renowned Aquila Big 5 Safari, which is just 15 minutes from the camp! Coupled with the world-class facilities available at the established hotel, there is something for everyone. The property offers a restaurant, bar, boma, communal swimming pool, and kids’ play area. The camp is dog-friendly, so no member of the family has to miss out on the fun!

AfriCamps at Karoo 1 is situated just north of the Hex River Pass, between De Doorns and Touws River, on the popular Karoo 1 Farm Estate. Mountains, rivers, and valleys meet in the Hex River Valley, where the Great Karoo begins. The surrounding mountain ranges, with the Matroosberg as the highest peak, create majestic views and beautiful rugged landscapes, softened by the first sight of Karoo shrublands. The narrow valley stretches along the N1 from Worcester to Touws River, with De Doorns, South Africa’s leading table grape-growing region, at the center. Did you know that more than half of the country’s table grape exports come from the Hex River Valley? Take in the beautiful tapestries of color en route to AfriCamps at Karoo 1, especially when visiting in autumn.

The name Hex River Valley is one of myth and mystery. The area used to be called the Exe River Valley, so named after the crisscrossing of rivers and ox-wagon trails, but a folk tale of the witch (or heks in Afrikaans) of the Exe River Valley led locals to start calling it the Hex River Valley instead. Legend has it that a witch visits the Matroosberg Mountains during a full moon in search of her long-lost love. The legend dates back to 1768 but remains a popular local folk tale to this day.

Your Hosts

Meet Taryn, Howard, and their kids Dylan, Emma, and Erin – owners of this beautiful Karoo farm and AfriCamps at Karoo 1, Hex Valley. Though accustomed to the hustle and bustle of city life in Cape Town, they cherish every opportunity to escape to their Karoo oasis where they can spend time enjoying the great outdoors.

Being the first Karoo farm as you travel north along the N1, the farm was renamed “Karoo 1”, but the tradition of warm, friendly hospitality has been continued by Taryn and Howard and their passionate team. Soon after becoming involved with the property in 2017, Taryn and Howard fell in love with the great expanse of 1800 hectares, beautiful mountain biking tracks, unique and artistic buildings, and a majestic rock pool.

The Karbonaatjie meat parcel of the 1800s has since been replaced by delicious traditional Karoo dishes, pizzas, and family meals prepared by our expert chefs. Today, the farm is much more than a quick stop-over. Its unique farm accommodation, beautiful Karoo wedding venue, and tranquil surroundings make the property a destination of its own.

The Karoo 1 team is ready to extend warm Karoo hospitality and looks forward to welcoming you to their hidden gem.

AFRICAMPS KLEIN KAROO, OUDTSHOORN

Located just 10 minutes from the centre of Oudtshoorn, within a pristine Karoo landscape with direct views of the Swartberg Mountains, AfriCamps Klein Karoo offers the perfect backdrop for relaxation in serene and majestic surroundings.

Farmer Piet Schoeman takes pride in the fact that the farm is not an ostrich show farm, but an authentic working ostrich farm. Guests on the ostrich tour can witness and learn about this uniquely South African farming practice. The farm is home to 20,000 ostriches, primarily raised for the production and worldwide export of ostrich meat, leather, and feathers. Additionally, a large portion of the 10,000-hectare farm is dedicated to free-roaming indigenous game such as giraffe, springbok, blue wildebeest, kudu, impala, eland, waterbuck, and nyala, providing yet another highlight for you to experience.

Situated just off the Garden Route, about an hour north of George, this farm is the perfect midway stop between Cape Town and Gqeberha. Oudtshoorn offers something for everyone in the family – explore the famous Cango Caves, take a drive through the scenic Swartberg Mountain pass, or immerse yourself in local culture at one of the many festivals held throughout the year. A stroll through the lively centre of this friendly town reveals its numerous charming restaurants and coffee shops.

AfriCamps Klein Karoo is also dog-friendly! Please inform us if you plan to bring your dog by adding a note to your booking. We allow one dog per tent, strictly by prior arrangement.

Your Hosts

AfriCamps Klein Karoo is a joint venture between Schoeman and de Jager, two neighboring families. Arnold de Jager and Piet Schoeman grew up together, born and bred in Oudtshoorn, farming was always close to both of their hearts. After school, they both went their separate ways. Little did they know of this great adventure awaiting them!

Both families have been farming in the Oudtshoorn area for many generations. Arnold and his wife, Esti-Mari, and their two sons Arnold and Michael love living on the farm and enjoy the fresh air and feeding the animals. Piet and Laura Schoeman, with their three children Jan-Hendrik, Stephanie and Albert take every chance they can to join the tourist tours on their farm, and love farm life.

From their joint love of animals and the hospitality industry, these two families started a partnership that resulted in the birth of something new, the first AfriCamps farm in South Africa! Your hosts now invites you to come and experience AfriCamps Klein Karoo and both their families’ lifestyles firsthand.
